“Thank you, Smoke. I’d like that, and I know Honu would too. He adores you. You’re the first guy I’ve seen him take up with, other than Bernie.”

Gambit

IWATCHED MY BROTHERwith my woman. My heart ached for her. Jaxon Stone stood patiently waiting beside my brother. The look on his face didn’t bode well. I pulled Stormy onto my lap before introducing them.

“Bébé, this is Detective Jaxon Stone. Stone, this is my Queen, Stormy St. James.”

Jaxon offered his hand to Stormy. “I wish we were meeting under better circumstances, Miss St. James. It’s a pleasure to meet you. Smoke told me about your cooking skills while we waited for my team to finish processing your house.”

Stormy’s voice shook as she asked, “My place is a crime scene?”

“We believe so.” I watched Stone pull a bagged piece of paper from his pocket. He handed it to Stormy.

She took the paper. Her face went pale, and she began to shake. The paper dropped out of her hand. Stormy scrambled to get off my lap.

“Oh God! He found me. I have to go. Where’s my SUV? I have to get Honu. Oh my God. I can’t leave him, but I can’t take him.”

I stood up, grabbing her gently by the arms. “Stormy, sweetheart, calm down.”

“I can’t— He found— He’ll kill me. He said he would.”

She was near hysteria now. I saw Smoke texting furiously on his phone.

“Nobody is going to kill you, bébé. Hell, no one will get close to my Queen.”

“You don’t understand.” She pleaded with me to get it. The fear rolled off her. I’d been in enough firefights to know fear.

Stone stepped in with directions. “Gambit, step in front of her. Take her hand and put it on your chest.”

“Stormy, look at me, bébé.”

It took a few tries before she looked at me.

“Now have her follow your breath.”

I nodded, understanding.

“Stormy, can you feel my heartbeat?”

She nodded her head.

“I want you to focus on my heartbeat while we take slow, steady breaths. Can you do that for me, bébé?”

Once again, she nodded her head.

“My Queen, I need words. Can you do that for me?”

“Yes.”

“That’s my Queen. Breathe in. Hold it.”

After a count of three, I told her to release the breath. We were on our fourth round with no signs of her breath slowing when Doc hurried through my office door. He rushed over to us.
