“If you have any designs on helping her escape,” he continues in a lofty tone. “You’d be best to rid yourself of them now.”

Einar opens his mouth to argue, but Remy barrels on. “Even though the outer guards will be otherwise engaged at the midnight toll of the bell, leaving only two at the interior, you can’t think that a man so conspicuous as yourself could have a chance at escaping with her.”

I narrow my eyes, and my husband mirrors the expression.

“Indeed,” is all Einar replies. “Whereas a man such as yourself…”

“Will be dancing in full view of the queen’s watchful guard.” Remy’s features don’t twitch, but he looks around ostensibly and speaks in a louder voice. “If only there were someone who she might trust, someone who was good at hiding.”

Given that Remy was an accomplished enough liar to fool even my sister, I have no reason to trust him now. Still, I saw the way he carried her tenderly from the site of her fire, and he’s clearly kept her secret this long.

More importantly, I have no way of getting her out without him.

With a resigned sigh, I heave the door to the room open. It’s just another risk I have to take.

I only hope Einar sees it that way.
