Damian’s lip twists in a disturbed grin, like he hears every dark thought that races through my head.

“Bold of you to assume she’ll keep that promise.” I grit my teeth, crooning the words. “Especially when she doesn’t publicly claim you.”

“Motheris not the liar in this family.” His tone is as bored as ever, but the way he emphasizes that puts me on edge.

I wait until he takes a sip of his drink before sniffing my own glass.

It’s a smoked whiskey, woodsy and sooty, but there is a trace of something else there, too. Something sweet.

Hul gil.Liquid poppies.

Not terribly original for a man who claims to be the son of an alchemist, but I doubt he was trying to kill me. More likely, he wanted to put me in a compromising position, something to make me look bad.

“Speaking of liars... Tell me again why Zaina insisted on going with you to that cave?”

Damian’s eyes dart up to meet mine.

“Come now, Damian. You wouldn’t want me to tell Mother that you were being... difficult, would you?”

His jaw twitches before he responds, no trace of amusement left in his tone. “She didn’t trust me to get the job done.”

“Well, that was certainly fair, considering what happened. So, then you… what? Just wandered into a cave that happened to have a dragon in it?” I leave my chair to walk closer to him, propping one leg up on the arm of his seat, my hand playing with the hilt of my dagger. “I think you’re lying. I think that you killed her.”

I stare into his eyes far longer than I would like, waiting for the second he admits it so I can finally kill him.

Damian laughs the same mirthless sound as before.

“And then what? I set myself on fire?” He gestures to the still-healing burns on his face and neck. “As usual, you’ve managed to miss the mark. I would never betray Mother that way.”

Rising from the arm of the chair, I take a step back, securing both of my feet on the floor.

“Yes, you would. You would betray anyone if you thought there would be no repercussions for it. You’re a sociopath, Damian. A lying, murdering, soulless sociopath.”

I toss the liquid in my glass at him. His face takes on a murderous expression as he quickly tries to wipe it off, unconcerned with the cloth tearing at his ruined flesh. He growls at me, spitting out the drops that made it into his mouth.

“Enjoy that dose ofhul gilyou tried to share with me.” I spin around, calling over my shoulder, “I certainly hope it wasn’t the lethal kind.”
