That would have made me suspicious, even if I hadn’t been watching his arrival.

It doesn’t have a lock, though, which strikes me as odd, considering he clearly finds it important. I flip the lid open, only to find it’s... empty.

The velvet cushioned lining is at odds with the plainer exterior, and I know — I know that something was in here. Something important. The jasmine smell is stronger here, but if it held my sister’s things, why did he empty it already?

Or am I overthinking this, and it merely held gifts for the royals who were hosting him?

I’m so caught up in running my hands along the insides, searching for any signs I might have missed, that I nearly miss the soft patter of a large, agile creature slinking its way between me and the door.

My mind goes numb with the kind of fear I wasn’t sure I was capable of anymore, my heart beating an unsteady rhythm in my ears. I only have time for one thought as I slowly turn around.
