Fury floods my veins. “So I should, what, hide in this room untilyoudecide it’s time to act?”

“I’m just asking you to be smart about this and not go rushing into anything. We’re here to play the long game.”

“That was before the long game required standing by and watching my sister be forced into marriage with a complete stranger!” I yell.

His expression shutters, his jaw slackening.

When he finally speaks, it’s in a deceptively quiet voice. “You say that like it’s a fate worse than death.”

Silence descends, heavy with the weight of everything we’ve said and all we haven’t.

I won’t take the words back. My marriage to Einar might have turned out for the better, in the end, but he will never understand what it is to besoldto another person like a piece of property.

“When Madame sold Aika’s virginity, I couldn’t stop her, but I promised myself I would never let anything like that happen to her again,” I say evenly.

“And what about your promise to me that we wouldn’t take unnecessary risks?” he asks, and there is an edge to the question.

“Don’t make me choose between being a sister and a queen.”

Einar’s voice is bitter when he responds. “Between being a sister and a wife, you mean.”
