She asks who it was, and he says he doesn’t know them all by name.

I can tell she is reluctantly intrigued with the way he’s managed to avoid information that would lead to him being completely compromised, but she doesn’t say that.

Finally, she asks the question that I think I would like the answer to also.

“Why are you here?”

“For my wife,” he says simply.

Madame turns to me, her eyebrow raised when she takes in my cold, furious expression.

“It would seem you did, indeed, do your job quite well, Aika.” She returns her attention to Remy. “You know, my daughter had a job, to get close to you. In every way.”

She leaves no doubt as to her meaning.

“Tell me, was she successful?”

He forces a smirk. “Quite.”

I glare at him, but Madame makes a thoughtful sound in the back of her throat.

“Apparently so, if you’ve come all the way here for her.” She clucks her tongue. “How, then, am I to expect that you will give your loyalty tome? Surely you understand I have no use for those who are not loyal to me.”

He meets her eyes. “Because I am loyal to her, and through her, anyone she is loyal to.”

There is a long pause while she considers this. WhileIconsider every single thing he could mean by it.

“So you would be willing to work for me even when you know I am responsible for your brother’s demise?” There is derision in her tone now, like she is mocking him for that betrayal.

If I knew what was capable of permeating her skin, I think I would stab her right now.

Remy looks away. “Louis is already gone, but Aika is not. I would do anything to keep her safe.”

The words are so earnest, he couldn’t be lying, not on the serum. I’m suddenly finding it hard to breathe, my eyes refusing to look away from the sincerity etched into every one of his features.

“Even after she betrayed you?” she pushes.

I resist the urge to flinch, but he doesn’t even hesitate.

“Yes,” he declares.

Her eyes narrow down at him in suspicion.

“Why?” Her tone is sharp, pointed, and I know this is the crux upon which this entire interrogation hinges.

Why, indeed.

He looks at me now, his cinnamon eyes glazed with the effects of the serum. “Because it doesn’t matter. I don’t care what she’s done. Every piece of her belongs to me.”

Every piece.I hear what he’s saying, even if she doesn’t. I told him he couldn’t take only the pieces he wanted.

And now he’s here, in the dungeon where I have hurt people and been hurt, where I have taken so many of my orders from Madame. He’s telling me he sees me, all of me, and that he wants me anyway.

I blink back my reaction to his words when Madame turns to look at me.

“And you, Aika?” she asks.

“I have only ever done what you asked of me, Mother. You know that.”Until Remy.
