Heat spreads through my limbs almost immediately, my breaths coming a little slower. I pop the lid back on the bottle and pace the room.

We have to be more careful. More alert.

All I want to do is rush to Zaina, to make sure she’s safe. To go into the city and find Remy, drag him back here by his stupidly gorgeous chestnut hair if I have to. But I can’t do anything that would give us away.

Instead, I have to sit still. Stay patient. Two things I have never excelled at.

So I pull my fiddle from its case. With my eyes facing the balcony, I spend the next few hours losing myself in the haunting music I create, if only to drown out Damian’s voice in my head.

If only to quell the imminent feeling that every single threat he made is going to come to pass, one way or another.

CHAPTERFORTY-SEVEN

REMY

Ihave been standing at the abandoned pier where I met Natia for well over an hour, long enough that dawn is breaking on the horizon. Wind gusts along the water, blowing icy sea spray up over the pier, and I shove my hands into my pockets to keep warm.

Lawrence waits on the docks, far enough not to startle her. Though I can’t help but wonder why she’s so skittish, knowing her age and what she’s capable of.

“Natia,” I whisper her name for what feels like the hundredth time, and still, nothing happens.

If she hasn’t shown up in the next few minutes, I will need to head back, with or without her information. And do this all over again tomorrow.

I am exhausted just thinking about it.

Groaning, I again scan the water for any sign of unusual movement, but the sea is constant motion this morning, with waves breaking against the docks and churning at the base of the ships. The overcast winter sky provides far less light than I would like, making it impossible to see much of anything.

“Natia,” I whisper her name again.

Another wave rolls in, covering the end of the pier with seafoam and water.

Then I remember Aika tempting her with a gold coin when the siren was struggling to focus, and I feel like an idiot for not thinking of it sooner. It has to be better than standing still and whispering a name into the silence.

Pulling out one of the coins from my pocket, I flip it in the air, allowing the gold to catch the limited light of the moon, reflecting it on the water.

A flash of silver appears at the edge of the pier, and I smile, flipping the coin again.

Two silver orbs appear this time, closer than before.

“Hello, Natia,” I say.

Her golden-brown skin breaks the surface, turquoise curls clinging to her back and shoulders as she peeks her head out of the water.

“I’ve been looking for you,” I tell her.

Her bright white smile stretches wide. Her beauty is unnerving, somehow amplified at night with her ethereal silver eyes.

“I know you,” she says, her head tilting to the side as she studies me. “You are the tiny one’s handsome friend.”

I nod, wondering how Aika would feel about her calling me handsome. The thought of her being even the slightest bit jealous makes me chuckle.

“Where is your mate?” she asks, looking around me, her eyes scanning the docks before landing on Lawrence’s shadowy figure farther back. She lowers herself into the water a little more but doesn’t leave.

It takes me a minute to realize she’s still referring to Aika.Did she know we were together before? Does she know who we really are now?

I can hardly ask without giving something away, so I answer her instead.

“She couldn’t make it tonight, but she sent me to speak with you about something important.”
