“Steph, there’s something else I have to discuss with you,” he said, lowering his voice. “Benny and Joe will be home any minute, and I need to speak with them in private. It’s going to take a while for them to accept you. They’re not old, but they’re old school.”

“Like my brothers,” she said, rolling her eyes.

“Yeah, like your brothers. They won’t feel comfortable talking in front of you.”

“I get it. They don’t know me. It will take time.”

“Exactly,” he said as his phone beeped. Pulling it from his pocket, he glanced at the screen. “They’re coming through the gates now.”

“Is it possible for me to have access to your security? I’d love to look at the cameras and see what’s covered.”

“Sure, and I’m glad you asked. You should have the system on your laptop. You might need it at some point.”

A wave of happiness moved through her heart.

He trusted her, and expected her to be there in the days ahead.

“I’ll make sure Benny sends you the information after I finish speaking with him. Just log into the network, and you’ll find everything laid out in a simple menu.”

“Fantastic, thank you. Will I be able to see that meeting you had with Oleg and Ivan?”

“I can ask Benny to send you the file, but why are you interested?”

“I’m just curious to watch them in action, although,” she said, pausing for effect. “I want to see you in action more.”

“You are so—” But Benny and Joe walked in before he could finish.

“Hello,” she said, quickly rising to her feet. “Marco, is it okay for me to wander around the house? There’s so much I haven’t seen.”

“Start upstairs,” he replied, guiding her to the door. “That will keep you entertained for a while.”

“Really? What’s up there?”

“Go and find out.”

“Okay.”

Walking into the hall and hearing the door shut behind her, she stopped and stared at the keypad. She wanted to ask if she could have the code, but she decided not to push her luck. It was Benny’s domain, and she didn’t want to step on any toes.

As Steph left the room, Benny dropped into his chair, and Joe grabbed a soda from the small refrigerator in the corner of the room.

“Okay, fellas, how did it go at Max’s?” Marco asked watching Joe pop the top of the can. “Tell me you found something.”

“Sorry, boss. There was nothing in any of the files about a lawyer,” Joe replied, “but the stuff we looked at was pretty mundane. He must have cabinets somewhere else.”

“No surprise there,” Marco agreed. “God only knows how many other hiding places he has in that building. What about his computer, Benny?”

“Uh, well, I found a laptop in the top drawer of his desk, but I’m not thrilled about plugging this into my computer,” Benny said with a grimace, pulling a flash drive from his pocket and holding it in the air.

“Because…?” Marco pressed.

“It was too easy. The drawer was locked, but it only took Joe ten seconds to open it.”

“Yeah,” Joe piped up. “For a guy who’s all about security it makes no sense.”

“Not only that,” Benny continued, “his computer wasn’t password protected. I did a quick look at some of the files and found couples kissing, pictures of hotels and buildings, and a few weird articles on physics of all things. Then I stopped and just downloaded everything. But—”
