“Don’t worry, I’ll talk to him. Come on down. I’ll see you on a camera when you get here and buzz you in.”

“Okay, I’ll be right there.”

Closing her computer and hurrying from the room, she trotted down the stairs and moved swiftly down the hall, crossing paths with the two guards she’d met in the backyard.

“Hey, there,” Brent said with a sharp nod of his head. “You’re in a hurry. Is everything all right?”

“Yes, fine. Sorry, I can’t stop,” she replied, rushing by him.

Reaching the door to the security room, she heard a click and pushed it open.

“Put your laptop here and show me what you’ve got,” Benny said, pointing to an empty space on his desk.

Quickly opening her computer and bringing up the footage, she played him the incriminating clip.

“Holy crap!” Benny mumbled. “I need a closer look at that cufflink. Can you zoom in?”

Seconds later, they stared at the image in momentary silence.

“It looks like a small cube,” she finally murmured. “What could it be?”

“I won’t know until we find the damn thing,” Benny growled. “My guess is he would’ve dropped it and kicked it out of sight. Fuck. This is bad.”

“I’ll see if I can find it. Where should I start searching?”

“Go back upstairs and leave this to me.”

Steph paused.

She didn’t want to go anywhere.

Knowing an argument would only make him dig in his heels, she sighed dramatically.

“You’re probably right,” she said quietly. “I hope you find it fast. I’m really worried.”

“I am too,” he said gravely, leaning closer to the screen and studying the mysterious black miniature block.

“Are you sure you don’t need another pair of eyes?” she suggested softly. “Surely the more people you have looking, the faster it will be found, and don’t you need all the guards to stay on patrol?”

Wearing a dark frown, he turned to look at her.

“Okay,” he said grimly. “I have two men in the house. Wait for them in the foyer.”

“Brent and Stu?”

“Yeah, you know them?”

“We ran into each other earlier.”

“Brent will be in charge. Follow his lead. Can you leave your laptop? I want to study this cube some more.”

“I can take a screen shot, sharpen the image, and send it to you.”

“Great. Do it.”

“Still no idea what it might be?” she asked as she worked her photographic magic.

“Any number of things,” he mumbled vaguely.
