“Damn…”

“Listen, Stu is supposed to do something, then message Oleg when things are ready. You need to get back to the compound and find out what that is, and fast.”

“Don’t worry,” Joe said grimly, swiftly spinning around and dashing off.

“I worked with a medic in the Marines,” Brent said, crouching down and studying Steph. “When we get back to the house would you like me to—”

“Yes,” Marco replied briskly. “Take the other Harley, and bring back a car. First though, can you grab my phone? It’s lying by the curb.”

“Yes, sir.”

“I thought he was a Marine,” Steph mumbled as Brent moved away.

“You did?”

“Uh-huh, when I met him on the grounds.”

“Here you are, sir. I’ll be right back with the car,” Brent said, handing Marco the phone then moving quickly to the bike.

“I’m so cold,” Steph muttered.

“After falling into that mud I’m not surprised.”

“What’s going to happen with Oleg?”

“You don’t have to worry about that,” Marco assured her as he called Benny. “Just try to relax.”

“Marco!” Benny exclaimed, picking up instantly. “Thank God. Where are you?”

“It’s a long story, but I’ll be with you in a couple of minutes.”

“Thank God,” Benny repeated. “Max called and said the Range Rover had blown up and he had no idea if you were in it. He scared the crap outta me.”

“Max is okay?”

“He seemed to be. He said he was heading home, but I have no clue how he got my number.”

“I gave it to him in case of an emergency when I connected with him up there, but listen, Steph is with me and—”

“Steph? She’s in the safe room.”

“No, she’s not, but she will be soon. I’ll explain when I see you, but make sure it has blankets, hot drinks, something to eat, whatever she might need.”

“Will do, boss. Tell her I did what she suggested in the meeting room. Do you know about that?”

“No, but I’ll be there in a minute,” Marco said quickly as he spotted headlights driving toward him. “There’s a lot to figure out and not much time to do it.”

“Okay, see you shortly. At least I can breathe now.”

“In spite of Oleg’s best efforts I can too,” Marco retorted, then ended the call. “Steph, Benny said he did what you suggested in the meeting room. What was that?”

“Talk to someone and say some of your paintings are forgeries. I thought if Oleg overheard that he’d change his mind.”

In spite of the perilous circumstances, Marco broke into a smile.

“Steph, you have a head full of ideas. Some brilliant, some crazy, and some not quite right, but you have them in abundance,” he replied as Brent pulled up and jumped from the car.

“The meeting room thing wasn’t quite right?”
