Stupid man, Marco. As you can see, I own Liam, and I win. Turn the lights back on.

“He wants me to power back up.”

“Gee, what a surprise,” Liam snapped sarcastically. “Do it.”

But breaking into a grin, Marco typed back a response.

Go fuck yourself, blockhead.

Lifting his eyes from the screen, he looked at Liam, his face abruptly contorting into a menacing stare.

“What are you waiting for?” Liam demanded, waving his gun. “Tell your guy to turn the lights on.”

“Liam, things aren’t what they seem.”

“What the fuck are you talking about? You’d better do what Oleg says or I’ll put a fucking bullet in your kneecap.”

“Bad idea,” Marco replied, lowering his voice. “That would piss me off.”

“I don’t know what the hell you’re playing at, but turn on the fucking lights or I’ll—”

“Freeze, asshole!”

Appearing from the shadows behind Liam, a man’s deep, husky command continued.

“I have a pistol aimed at the back of your head. Drop the weapon and kick it across to Marco.”

“You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me,” Liam snarled.

“Liam, you’ve lost,” Marco said calmly. “Do as he says. Trust me, he’ll have no problem putting a bullet through your head.”

“I don’t believe this,” Liam grunted, shaking his head. “I just don’t believe it.”

“Quit stalling,” Marco continued. “It’s over. Place your gun on the floor and kick it over here. Now!”

“How did you know?”

“I didn’t,” Marco replied, “not until five minutes ago.”

“You’re making a big mistake,” Liam exclaimed, still holding his weapon. “Oleg’s men are—”

“Oleg’s men are under my control,” the deep voice barked, “and so are he and his brother. Gun on the floor! Now! I won’t ask again!”

“Sonofabitch,” Liam shouted, but finally let the revolver slip from his fingers and kicked it forward.

“Okay, Benny,” Marco called, bending down and picking it up. “Let there be light.”

But as the lamps flickered back on, a flash of white caught Marco’s eye. Darting his head around, he saw Steph standing in the door. Dressed in a robe, she was holding a can of bathroom cleaner, and staring in shock at the man standing behind Liam.

“Dad…?”

“Stephania…?”

Chapter 35

Marco watched in horror as Liam seized the opportunity and charged Steph, but jerking up the can, she sprayed the bathroom cleaner directly into his face. As he screamed and threw his hands over his eyes, Marco dashed forward, lifted her by the waist, and hastily carried her across the hall to the games room, slamming the door shut with his foot.

“Are you out of your mind?” he demanded, hurrying her into the safe room and depositing her on the couch.
