“You’re very lucky.”

Startled, she looked toward the bathroom. He was dressed and striding toward the bed.

“If you weren’t here, you’d be up to your pretty little neck in all kinds of crap.”

Her heart skipped. “Why? What’s happened?”

“Your apartment has been ripped apart, and my boys aren’t given to exaggeration. Your clothes and belongings are all over the place.”

“I can’t believe it,” she whispered, a tremble rippling through her body.

“If you’d been home…”

“If I’d been home—what?”

“What do you think? You sure as hell wouldn’t be in a luxury hunting lodge, I can promise you that. Wake up, Steph. I saved your life. You’re in over your head, and I threw you a life jacket.”

Heat burned the back of her throat.

“He was right,” she whispered, recalling the many times her dear friend had warned her.

“Who was right, and what were they right about?” Marco demanded, standing over her and crossing his arms.

“Max. He knew I was following you… and… uh… the people you met up with. Sometimes I’d tail you and sometimes I’d tail them.”

“Why?”

She paused. “It was exciting. I’ve been told I’m an adrenalin junkie.”

“You followed me out here believing I’d be meeting up with some business associates.”

A hot blush crossed her face. “That’s true,” she murmured.

“Of course it’s true. That’s the false information I fed you. Were you hoping to overhear us? Plant a bug? What?”

“I didn’t have anything in particular in mind. It was more like… going fishing, and for the record, I actually did want your photograph.”

“You failed, and your fishing rod has been broken,” he said gravely. “You’ll stay in this room until—”

“I just want more from life,” she blurted out, interrupting him.

“We all want more, but there are safer and much smarter ways to get it. You can spend your time thinking about that. I’ll come and get you when it’s time for dinner. We’ll talk more then.”

“Uh, I don’t have any clothes. Can you please fetch my parachute pants and shoes?”

“My men are bringing a bag of your things with them. Speaking of which, your trainers will be locked away.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Just an extra precaution. You can’t get very far out here barefoot.”

“But I—”

“At the moment you have no intention of doing anything you shouldn’t, but who knows what that overactive head of yours might come up with. Before I go, is there anything else you want to tell me?”

“Nothing I can think of.”

“I’ll see you later.”
