“Uh-huh,” she managed as she caught her breath, hating how her body was already melting.

“It’s dinnertime. Get dressed.”

Marco watched her slip into a pink fuzzy sweat suit, but the only shoes in the bag was a pair of stilettos. He chuckled. Benny and Joe knew what he liked. Telling her to wait, and fetching her a pair of his thick woolly socks, he laughed out loud as she put them on. They were way too big, and the heels rested around her ankles.

“I appreciate having some of my things, but I can’t wear your big socks all the time,” she remarked as he guided her out of the bedroom and down the hall. “If I’m going to be staying here, I’ll need more than high heels and sneakers, assuming you’ll give those back to me. It’s just as well we’re going back.”

Though several responses flashed through his head, he didn’t say anything. Entering the dining room, he found the table was set with a bowl of pasta, Caesar salad, warm bread, and an open bottle of burgundy waiting to be poured. As they sat down and helped themselves, he watched her carefully.

She was anxious, but not as nervous as she had been, and he sensed her conflict. He’d seduced her submissive soul and captured her imagination. Her heart would follow. That was given, but he’d have to end things before she became too emotionally entangled. He also knew, in spite of the spell he’d cast, her head raged with protests.

He was a gangster, yet she was inexplicably drawn to him, and he probably had more women than he could count. At some point she’d be dumped, possibly heartbroken and desperate… if she survived that long.

Her clashing thoughts were written across her face.

“You’ll be sleeping with me tonight,” he announced, breaking the silence.

Her head darted up. “I will? Uh, why?”

“I want your naked body in my bed,” he said casually, as if he was talking about coffee after their meal.

Her face turned red.

He grinned.

He suspected she loathed her uncontrollable penchant for the blush that constantly betrayed her.

“We’ll watch a little television then go to sleep. It’s been a long day, but don’t be surprised if I wake up in the middle of the night and fuck your brains out.”

Her crimson flush deepened.

“Are you really so innocent?” he asked, expertly twirling the noodles around his fork as he stared at her across the table. “You don’t strike me as a shrinking violet.”

“I’m not. Why would you say that?”

“You seem uncomfortable with what I just said.”

“What if I don’t want to sleep with you?”

“But you do,” he replied, quickly adding, “Before you deny it, bear in mind you’ve already told too many lies, and you’ll be at my mercy in a dungeon tomorrow night.”

“That’s not an answer,” she retorted. “Whether I do or not isn’t the point. You might be right, but maybe I have reasons I’d rather not. There’s a pair of fabulous boots I’m dying to buy, but I won’t. I know I’ll hardly ever wear them and they’re ridiculously expensive. That doesn’t stop me wanting them.”

He grinned. It was a clever response.

“What are they like, these boots you want but can’t afford?”

“Why?”

“Steph…” he said, lowering his voice and glaring at her. “You need to answer my questions, and not constantly come back at me demanding justification. Tell me about the boots.”

“But they’re irrelevant.”

Sitting back, he picked up his wine, took a drink, then set down his glass.

“I guess you really do like getting your ass whipped.”
