Her sassy retort fueled his desire.

“You can be such a brat,” he muttered, roughly gripping her elbow and striding from the room.

He knew they’d end up between the sheets together. It was inevitable, but besides his intense attraction, there was a practical side to having sex with the mobster’s daughter. It would make her more manageable. She needed a firm hand and he’d be happy to oblige.

“This room is quite a bit bigger,” she remarked as they entered, “but looking down at the beach will be amazing.”

“I love zoning out on the ocean,” he said as he released her. “I spend as much time at my cottage as I can.”

“I’m sure you do,” she said, moving across to the window. “I see what you mean about looking down on the street. Hey, Nick, there are some guys clearing away the mess.”

“That’s odd,” he muttered, striding quickly across to join her.

“Why? After that storm I’m sure there are people dealing with the debris everywhere.”

“But it takes a while to find an available crew after a major storm, and that street is private. It’s maintained by the homeowners. I wasn’t notified there’d been a cleanup happening, and I would have been the moment the arrangements had been made.”

“Shit,” she hissed under her breath, then looked up at him with worried eyes. “Who do you think they are?”

He had an idea, but not sure how she’d take the news, he didn’t respond.

“Nick, don’t do that,” she said brusquely. “You’re holding back. Tell me what you’re thinking!”

“Number one, don’t take that tone with me,” he scolded, frowning down at her. “Number two, if I think it’s in your best interests not to give you certain information, I won’t, and number three, don’t forget who calls the shots around here.”

“Jeez, you don’t have to get your boxers in a twist,” she shot back. “You can’t blame me for wanting to know.”

“Again with theyou can’t blame me,” he said sternly. “Yeah, I can. It’s time you learned to control that demanding nature of yours and hold your tongue.”

The moment the words left his lips, the image of her on her knees pleasuring his cock flashed through his mind.

“Next time you speak to me like that you’re going to get your ass spanked. Are we clear?” he said with a flinty glare, trying to push the salacious image out of his mind.

“I’m sorry, Nick,” she said softly, her voice instantly changing. “I’m just anxious, and I’ll try to do better.”

Though the line sounded like something she’d said a thousand times, and he thought her woeful expression was contrived, he put his arms around her and pulled her against him.

“I know this situation is difficult and you’re scared, but you have to keep it together,” he said solemnly. “Being impatient and demanding won’t help. Most of all, you have to trust me. I know about this stuff.”

“I realize that, and I do trust you. You’ve been amazing. Youareamazing.”

“I am good at my job. I’m known as a fixer, and I’m one of the highest paid in the business.”

“I’m sure you are, and I still can’t believe how lucky I am,” she muttered, shifting in his arms to stare up at him. “So, uh, who do you think those men are clearing the road? Please, will you tell me?”

“It’s just a theory, but your father has limitless resources. It’s possible you’ve been tracked to this area, and those men picking up branches and litter are actually here looking for you.”

“Oh, my gosh, I would never have thought of that, but you’re right. My dad has contacts everywhere. Nick, they can’t find me,” she sputtered, panic in her voice. “I’m worried he has a traitor inside his inner circle. If I’m found, whoever it is will get wind of it.”

“Hey, relax, I’m only speculating, and even if I’m right, they’re looking for a long-haired brunette. You’re a short-haired blonde.”

“Of course,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to lose it, except if your theory is right and they are working for Dad, they might recognize Matteus and Tony.”

“That crossed my mind too,” Nick murmured thoughtfully, “but I suspect the dynamic duo won’t want to be seen by anyone and will stay out of sight. Speaking of which, I have to hear what they’ve been saying, then I’ll go outside and meet these alleged street cleaners.”

“Why don’t I listen while you go? I’ll make note of anything that might be important. “

“That’s not a bad idea,” Nick remarked, thinking the simple task might help her feel more in control.
