The erotic sight tempted him.

He’d listen to whatever his equipment had recorded, then he’d ravage her until she was screaming with pleasure into the pillow.

CHAPTER11

Picking up the chair by the antique desk against the far wall, Nick carried it past Bianca into the closet, but she didn’t speak or move as he walked by. Satisfied she was obeying him, he placed the chair in front of the cabinet, sat down, and pushed in an AirPod. Moments later he was listening to what the equipment had recorded.

There wasn’t much of note until Nick shouted into the tiny microphone Matteus had been hidden beneath the coffee table. When Matt and Tony heard it, Tony accused Matt of incompetence, Matteus became enraged, and for several minutes Nick expected the men to start throwing punches, but abruptly the fight stopped. Listening intently, Nick heard Tony’s angry voice change to one of deep concern. A couple of minutes passed before Matteus announced he was okay, then loudly cursed his angina.

Nick caught his breath.

Matt had a heart condition.

It was startling and significant information.

Fast forwarding through long periods of silence and minor tidbits of conversation, the recording came to an end, and he began listening in real time. He was about to return to Bianca and let the machine continue to eavesdrop, when Matt suddenly began talking about the night of Bianca’s abduction. As Nick listened, his pulse ticked up, and a dark frown crossed his brow. Though the conversation had been brief, it had been unexpected and alarming.

Copying the explosive dialogue to an encrypted file, he deleted it from the recording and leaned back in his chair. Rubbing his hands over his face and pondering what he’d just heard, he slowly rose to his feet and headed out of the closet to see Bianca, but as he stepped into the bedroom he caught his breath.

She was gone.

Quickly dashing into the hall and running to the bedroom where he’d left her bag, he urgently pushed down the door handle, only to discover it was locked.

“Bianca, open this door.”

“No, you’re nothing but a bully. Go away.”

He rolled his eyes at her childish behavior, but he was grateful she hadn’t left the house.

“I’m going to count to three. If you don’t let me in, I’ll pick this lock, but if I have to do that, I’ll be more upset than I am already. I strongly advise you to do as I ask and let me in. One—two—”

“Okay, okay,” she yelled, swinging it open and glaring up at him. “I suppose you’re going to spank me again now.”

“Is that what you think I should do?” he asked, stepping into the room and seeing the suitcase open on the bench at the foot of the bed. “Are you going somewhere, or unpacking?”

“I was just trying to decide that. It’s not like I can call a taxi, but shit, maybe I can. There’s a landline here.”

“And you’d pay for it how?”

Wordlessly turning away, she moved to the window overlooking the beach and slid the drapes apart.

“Nick, did you know I can sail?”

“No,” he replied, humoring her as he walked over to join her.

“I can, and I’m really good. I wish I had a yacht. I’d sail off into the sunset.”

“Is that what you want to do? Disappear?”

Letting out a heavy sigh, she turned to face him. “Maybe.”

“Are you the stereotypical poor little rich girl, Bianca?” he murmured, tracing his finger around her face. “Do you have everything and nothing?”

“Why are you being nice to me? Aren’t you furious that I left the bed?”

“Furious, no, disappointed, yes, but I understand why you did it.”

She frowned.
