“Bianca, please, I’m at a complete loss,” he said with a sigh, softening his voice and loosening his hold. “If I said or did something to upset you, I’m truly sorry. I honestly thought we were on the same page.”

“Nick, I—uh—I—we were,” she stammered, staring at the ground, then taking a deep breath, she squared her shoulders and looked up at him. “Okay, Nick, I’ll tell you. The choices and the instructions, they were great, better than great, but I’m not into having my feelings ignored. Maybe that was part of the game, but it was cruel and hurtful,” she finished, her voice rising. “How could you do something like that?”

“What the hell are you talking about? When did I ignore your feelings?”

“When do you think?” she shouted, tears springing from her eyes.

“I have absolutely no idea.”

“How the fuck can you say that?” she shouted. “Are you some kind of emotional sadist?”

“Stop yelling,” he said sternly, but keeping his voice even. “Tell me exactly when and how I ignored your feelings, because if I did, I promise you, it wasn’t intentional.”

She was staring at him, frowning and completely confounded, then she suddenly rolled her eyes and her jaw dropped.

“Oh, my God, you didn’t hear what I said,” she breathed as if speaking to herself. “Nick,” she continued, turning her gaze back to him, “what was the last thing we talked about just before the waiter put the sole on the table?”

“I said something like, you’re going to wrap your lips around my cock and show me just how much you love it. Does talking about oral sex offend you?”

“No, no,” she said quickly, “but what did I say to you?”

“I’d love to.”

Letting out a cry, she fell against his chest.

“What the hell?” he muttered, swiftly moving his arms around her.

“I’m okay, honest,” she sputtered. “I misunderstood something and I’m really sorry. Please, can we go back inside and forget this ever happened?”

“Are you crazy?” he declared, pushing her back and cupping her face in his hands. “I can’t stand to see you so upset. Dammit, Bianca, don’t you get it?”

“Get what?”

“I love you, dammit! There, I’ve said it, though this is not how I’d planned to tell you.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really, now put me out of my misery and tell me why you left the table and came out here. For the last time, what the hell is going on?”

“I didn’t sayNick, I’d love to, I saidNick, I love you,and you didn’t even blink. All you said wastry your sole, it’s delicious. It felt like you’d ripped my fucking heart out.”

“Oh, my God,” he groaned, wrapping her up in his arms and holding her tightly. “From now on, if I say or do something that doesn’t make sense, speak up.”

“I will, I promise.”

Closing his eyes, he let the relief flood his heart.

“I must look a mess,” she murmured with a sigh. “I need to stop in the ladies’ room and fix myself before we can go back to our table.”

Slowly pulling back, he lifted his phone from his pocket. “This will only take a second,” he promised, tapping the screen.

“Who are you calling?”

“I had to send a quick text,” he replied with a smile as he put it away, then lowered his lips on hers in an endless, devouring kiss.

Bianca thought she might faint. Her chest was rising and falling with her heavy breaths, and all she could think about was being naked with him in a warm bed. As he pulled back and guided her to the door, she leaned against him for support, but when they entered the short passage, he didn’t head to the dining room. He turned and started up a flight of stairs.
