“Nope, I just count myself lucky to be working for him.”

CHAPTER22

Mike’s odd mutterings hadn’t surprised Lorenzo. One of his bodyguards had forewarned him. The former wrestler had been acting strangely, quoting the bible at odd times and talking about evildoers. As he stared out at the sea of tiny lights below, and waited for his men to have Mike secured in the back of the long, sleek limousine, Lorenzo pondered his approach. He’d always liked Mike. He was a simple soul who did his job well, and in spite of his strange behavior, Lorenzo firmly believed he must have had a profound reason for murdering Roland.

“He’s ready for you, Mr. Albertini.”

Stepping up to the car and climbing inside, Lorenzo was momentarily unnerved. Mike’s huge size was accentuated by the small space, but he was handcuffed, strapped into a seatbelt, and there was a man holding a gun on either side of him. Lorenzo’s concern passed quickly.

“How are you feeling, Mike?” he asked, settling opposite him.

“Relieved, Mr. Albertini,” Mike replied solemnly. “Relieved and grateful to God. The demon is dead and you dealt with his evil servants. Now your beautiful Bianca is safe.”

“Yes, she is, and bless you, Mike, for all you’ve done.”

“Thank you, sir. I was just following God’s orders,” Mike said modestly, lowering his eyes. “I am merely his servant.”

“Tell me about that.”

“Which part, sir?”

“The demon called Roland.”

“He tried to kill Matteus,” Mike growled, his gaze darting up. “Roland was a demon sent from Satan.”

Lorenzo paused.

“Mike, what do you mean, tried to kill him? I believe Matteus is dead.”

“Oh, no, sir, I saved him. The demon had thrown the bottle of pills on the floor, but he left to yell at his cousin Tony and the others followed him. I picked it up and gave him one, and he opened his eyes,” Mike said proudly.

“But why? Didn’t he want to hurt Bianca? He took her away.”

“I was the one who found him in that room, and he told me he’d taken Bianca to keep her safe from the demon,” Mike said gravely. “After he had his pill and woke up, he said other stuff, bad stuff.”

“I’m listening, and I need to know every detail. It’s the only way to keep Bianca safe.”

“I understand,” Mike said, nodding his head. “The demon was looking for your beautiful daughter so he could get a ransom for her,” Mike declared, his face contorting in anger. “He claimed that’s why Matteus had taken her, but I knew the demon was lying.”

“Yes, I see,” Lorenzo said softly. “Keep going, Mike.”

“He promised to give everyone a cut, but he had a black heart. He would have killed them all. He told Tony to shoot the men taking him back to Vegas. Oh, Mr. Albertini, I didn’t tell you, that’s how the demon knew Matteus and Bianca were in the house on the beach. Tony called and told him. The demon was only pretending to be surprised when he found him for the sake of me and the others. I listen,” he continued in a hushed whisper. “God told me the only way to know the truth is to listen.”

“How do you listen?”

“I have a few special secret phones,” Mike answered, still whispering. “I can plug one into another person’s phone, then I hear their calls and read their texts. If I think someone is Satan’s servant, I do that, then I can find out for sure.”

“I’d be very interested in seeing those, Mike. Where did you get them?”

Mike frowned, then slowly shook his head.

“I’m so sorry, Mr. Albertini, but I promised never to tell anyone, and if I break my word, God won’t like that. He might punish me.”

“But if you tell me, I can get a special secret phone to find other demons and save other angels like Bianca. I’m sure God would be very pleased about that.”

“He would,” Mike murmured thoughtfully and nodding his head. “I must pray on it first, but when we get back to Vegas I’ll be happy to show them to you.”

“Thank you. Do you know where Matteus is now?”
