“What are you going to do?”

“Order in, Sir.”

“See that you do,” he said sternly, landing the third.

“Ow! Ooh, that hurt!”

“You don’t have to eat a lot, but you do have to eat. Have I made myself clear?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Will I need to use my stick on your lovely backside next time I’m here?”

“No, Sir.”

Returning the hairbrush to the table, he began his soothing caress, listening to her sighs and moans until he felt her body relax.

“Time for your cuddle,” he murmured, helping her to curl into his lap. “Do you feel calmer? Are you ready to face the day?”

“Yes, Sir, thank you so much. I don’t know why this makes everything better, but it does.”

“I’ll always be here for you, Anna,” he said softly. “You’ve come a long way very fast. It’s exciting, but it’s also a lot to deal with, and I know the business can be scary. Just remember, you’re not alone.”

CHAPTER TEN

LETTING OUT ANOTHERheavy sigh, Anna Lee shifted to sit on his lap and sank into his chest. Zach could feel the change in her. The frazzled nerves were history, and her need to scream and yell was gone.

“You’re amazing,” she murmured. “You always help me. Somehow you know just what to say and do. Why am I so lucky?”

“Anna, I’m just like any other guy. When a damsel is in distress it’s in our nature to help, and I’ll let you in on a little secret. We need to be needed.”

“You’re not just like any other guy,” she said earnestly, sitting back and looking up at him. “I don’t know where I’d be without you.”

“I’m glad I can help. Now tell me what you’re going to do when you get to work.”

“I’ll be polite and pleasant, but mostly I’ll be professional.”
