“What if I don’t want to work in television? What if I want to work in film?”

“Then you’ll have to find a position in another company.”

“Why am I even here talking to you if you had no intention of hiring me?”

“Wow,” he exclaimed, leaning back in his chair. “I’m sorry, but, wow.”

“Wow, what?”

“You knew when you walked in I had nothing for you, and so much for being zonked.”

“It’s a reasonable question,” she fired back at him. “Why am I here if you’re not interviewing me for a job?”

“First, young lady, don’t speak to me in that tone! Second, if I had any inkling to consider you for a position, which I don’t, your disrespectful and entitled attitude just slammed the door shut.”

“What attitude?”

“I agreed to see you because I thought I might be able to offer you some guidance,” he said solemnly, ignoring her question, “and now I must repeat what I said yesterday. Someone needs to spank you very hard, for a very long time.”

THOUGH A THOUSAND BUTTERFLIESbegan fluttering in her unsettled stomach, and a deep blush crawled inexorably up her neck to her face, she was determined not to look away.

“That’s not what you said.”

“Close enough, and not only am I right, you know I’m right.”

“You can’t talk to me like that!”

“I just did.”

“If Kurt Fielding offers me a job I’m going to take it, just so I can be around to annoy you.”

“You can do whatever you want, but you’ll be on the other side of the building. It’s unlikely our paths will cross. And for the record, you don’t annoy me. Almost every time you open your mouth you confirm what I believe about you, but you don’t annoy me.”

“If you really did come to see me yesterday to ask me out, it would have been a wasted trip,” she exclaimed, jumping to her feet. “I wouldn’t go out with you if you were the last man on the planet.”

“Excellent. I’ll pick you up tomorrow night at 7 p.m. When you’ve calmed down, call Martha and give her your address. Now I must get back to work. Good luck with Kurt.”

“What?”

Ignoring her, he picked up his phone and buzzed his secretary.

“Martha, Miss Hartman is leaving.”

“You’re insane,” Emma hissed. “Do you really think I’ll go out with you?”

“Do you really think you won’t?”

Finding no retort, she turned and marched towards the door which magically opened at precisely the right moment.

“Good day, Miss Hartman,” Martha said as she stormed past her.

“Probably is for some people, but it sure as hell isn’t for me.”
