“And...”

“No question. It’s a winner. I have a few notes. The lead needs to be sympathetic earlier on. We have to like him sooner, and we have to know why he’s doing what he’s doing from the outset. There are other things, but that’s the most important.”

“I agree a thousand percent.”

“It’s an easy fix, assuming the writer sees it our way. Let’s get it on the conveyor belt. Be in my office at eight-thirty Monday. One more thing. Not pleasant. Kurt Fielding. He’ll be clearing out his desk today.”

“I’m not sure what to say,” Zach muttered, and though he couldn’t point his finger to anything specific, he wasn’t surprised.

“I just wanted you to know.”

“Thanks, I appreciate it.”

“Have a good weekend, Zach. See you Monday.”

“You too, Jerry, see you Monday.”

Ending the call, he leaned back and pictured Kurt. There had always been somethingoffabout him, though he’d made some inspired decisions.

“Is everything all right?”

Emma’s soft voice floated across to him. Lifting his gaze, he saw her standing in the doorway wrapped in the bathrobe provided by the hotel. Though her hair was tousled, and her face makeup free, she looked luscious.

“I’m not sure how to answer that. I have some fabulous news, and some, uh, other news.”

“What’s the fabulous news?” she asked, walking over and settling on his lap.

“I’m at the Bel Air with this gorgeous creature who’s full of surprises.”

“Who’s the lucky girl?”

“A very spoiled, very sexy, very delectable daughter of a famous director.”

“Interesting. Is she special?”

“She’s very special,” he said, lowering his voice, “and I hope she knows that.”

“She does now,” Emma breathed, sinking against him.

“Would you like to hear the other fabulous news?”

“Of course, but it couldn’t be more fabulous than what I just heard.”

Zach smiled, silently agreeing.

“A project I’m crazy about just got the green light.”

“Congratulations,” she exclaimed, sitting up and grinning at him. “That’s fantastic.”

“It is, but it’s also day one of the many days ahead when anything could go wrong. Even so, I have a great feeling about it.”

“And the not so good news?”

“Hold on to your hat, and it’s confidential until it’s been made public.”

“Okay.”

“You don’t have to worry about working for Kurt Fielding. He just got canned.”
