As he and Martha left the room, he could hear the murmurings behind him.

“How did I do?” he asked quietly as they headed back to his office. “Is everyone mildly shocked, or seriously shocked?”

“You were brilliant as usual, and I’d say mildly shocked. They’re all pretty good about taking things in stride, though I was surprised Daniel didn’t ask you why you were bringing her in.”

“I was too.”

“I hope you do as well when you talk to her.”

“You and me both,” he said with a sigh.

“That’s going to be interesting,” she remarked with a grin. “I wish I could be a fly on the wall.”

“I’m glad you won’t be. I’m not sure I could pull it off with you watching over my shoulder. Now I have to run. I have to meet with Anna Lee.”

“That’s not in your calendar.”

“Sorry, I forgot to tell you this morning, and I probably won’t be back, but you can reach me on my cell.”

“Zach, the traffic might be starting on Pacific Coast Highway. If it is, take the time to relax a bit.”

He paused, then nodded.

“As usual, good advice. Thanks, Martha.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

HEADING DOWN TO THEgarage, Zach checked his watch. It was just past 3:30 p.m. Martha had been right, but with luck he’d beat the worst of it. He needed to deliver his news to Anna Lee in person, and it had to be done right away.

Climbing into his car and speeding out of the garage, he expertly guided his Bentley through the lanes of traffic, but forced to a stop behind a line of cars waiting at a light, he gazed out at the beach and the sparkling Pacific. The palm trees were moving in the gentle breeze, people were jogging, and yachts glided by in the distance. The picturesque scene helped him relax.

The traffic began to move, then flow. Cruising down Pacific Coast Highway, he tuned into his favorite XM channel and left the drama of the workday behind him. As he passed Topanga Canyon and neared Anna Lee’s home, the traffic traveling south disappeared.

There was not a single car coming towards him.

He immediately knew the empty road would be the result of an accident.
