“Huh, is that right? Do you remember the name of this script?”

“Something strange, but catchy, like, The Moon and Fairies. That’s not it, but close. Does it ring a bell? Maybe I shouldn’t have said anything. He told me to keep it to myself, but I’m not worried about you. I tell you everything.”

“No, you don’t have to worry about me, and I do know what he’s talking about, but if he told you to keep it quiet, I wouldn’t mention you asked me about it.”

“You’re right. Did I just hear a car? I don’t usually because of the traffic noise, but it’s very quiet today. I heard you when you pulled up.”

“There must have been an accident. The southbound lanes were empty when I arrived. Where’s he coming from?”

“He was just finishing a meeting in Santa Monica.”

“Then it’s probably him,” Zach said breaking their hug. “I should be heading off anyway.”

“Zach, I know you said you’ll always be here for me, and I believe you, but I feel like this is a goodbye, and it makes me so sad. How can I thank you for everything you’ve done? It’s impossible. I’ve never had a friend like you.”

There was a knock at the door. They shared a look.

“Don’t worry. I’ll tell him I was here to talk to you about some problems with the film,” Zach said, lowering his voice. “Are you okay?”

“I don’t know, I think so, but my throat’s hot. I’m finding this very hard.”

“Take a deep breath,” he whispered. “That timing thing we talked about is happening right now. There’s a gorgeous guy on the other side of that door who’s dying to see you.”

“Right,” she said, taking a deep breath and wiping away a stray tear. “That helped, I’m okay now.”

“Of course you are, and you’d better let him in.”

Walking quickly across the living room, she opened the door, and Angelo’s tall, muscular frame strode into the room.

“Hi, Anna,” he said, looking her up and down. “You look—oh, hello,” he added, suddenly spying Zach.

“Hey, I’m Zach Taylor, Continental Pictures,” Zach said, stepping forward with his hand extended. “Good to meet you, Angelo. I’m a big fan of your work.”

“Thanks. Nice to meet you too. Sorry if I’m interrupting.”

“You’re not,” Zach replied. “I just stopped in to talk to Anna about some issues we’re having on the film. I’m sorry you and I have never actually met. We should have. Our paths must have crossed a dozen times.”

“Yeah. This town’s weird like that.”

“Weird?” Anna Lee interjected. “I think that must be the word of the day. Zach and I were just talking and it kept coming up.”

“Must be something in the air,” Zach remarked. “Good to meet you, Angelo, and I must hit the road. Bye, Anna, call me if you have any questions.”

“I will, and thanks, Zach. Drive safely.”

AS ZACH LEFT AND ANNAclosed the door after him, Angelo put his laptop case on the coffee table and looked at her quizzically.

“I think I’ve seen you two out together. Are you guys an item?”

“What? Oh, no. Zach has been really good to me and we’re friends, but nothing romantic.”

“Hey, it’s none of my business,” Angelo said, “but I’m glad to hear it.”

“You are?”

“Yeah. I really enjoyed our talk, and like I said when I dropped you off, I was hoping you and I could get to know each other.”
