STELLA WAS FAIRLY SUREJohn had never arrived at the party, yet he’d sent her a letter. It was bizarre—even for him. As much as she wanted to hear Heather Ramsey sing, she suddenly needed to know what he’d written. Ripping open the envelope and unfolding the piece of paper, she began to read. A minute later, completely stunned, she dropped on the edge of the mattress.

“Stella. Aren’t you coming?” Stephanie asked, stepping into the room. “What’s that? Are you okay?”

“Steph, John’s leaving and he’s giving me the house and some money and he’ll be gone by tomorrow night,” she blurted out in a breathless torrent of words. “I can’t believe it.”

“Holy crap! Are you sure? Did he say why?”

“Kind of. Oh, my gosh, you have no idea what this means.”

“It means you’re free of him. Do you want me to stay here with you?

“What? No, I want to join Matt and listen to Heather sing,” Stella exclaimed, pushing the letter back in the envelope and shoving it into her purse. “My head is spinning, but come on, we need to go.”

QUICKLY GATHERING TOGETHERa select group of movers and shakers, Matt had invited them into his den promising a surprise. He had also reined in some friends who were music producers, and a couple of A&R gurus.

Heather’s father was standing in the shadows in the back of the room. Tony had made sure he’d be there by telling him one of the lingerie models was dying to meet him.

Seated near the antique secretary, Heather and Tony waited impatiently, and when the important guests finally settled into their seats, Tony placed his lips against her ear.

“Lark, are you ready?”

She grinned.

“I love my new name, and yes I am.”

“Break a leg, sweetheart.”

“Tony...”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you. It seems so inadequate, but, thank you.”

“No, thank you.”

“For what?”

“I’ll explain later,” he said with a wink, then strode off and faced the small audience.

“Good evening everyone. My name’s Tony Verdi, and I’m here to introduce you to a very special singer-songwriter. She’s known simply as Lark. Her first number is called The Green-Eyed-Monster.”
