There was wisdom in the words, and they helped. Drying off, she dressed in a comfortable track suit and headed off to see Stephanie.

Fifteen minutes later, she was admiring her refection in the oval mirror in Stephanie’s sewing room. The unique outfit flattered her figure, and the shimmering red fabric highlighted her bright blue eyes and long blonde hair.

“You look fabulous,” Stephanie exclaimed. “Dark mascara and red lipstick, and you’ll have men throwing themselves at your feet.”

“Works for me,” Stella replied, a wry grin curling her lips.

“Uh, Stella,” Stephanie began hesitantly, “I get the feeling something’s wrong. I don’t mean to pry, but if you need me...”

“Actually, Steph, I do,” Stella said, her expression becoming serious as she turned to face her. “Help me take this off. I have to sit down and talk to you. It’s, uh, very important.”

As Stephanie helped her change, Stella tried to think of the best way to explain what happened, then realized there was nobest way.She just had to tell the story. Settling into the couch, she relayed the events of the night before.

“This is terrible. How can you be so calm?” Stephanie asked, putting her arm around Stella’s shoulders. “I’d be absolutely beside myself.”

“I was last night, that’s why I tried to reach you,” Stella said with a sigh, then taking a breath, she added, “Steph, I’m pretty sure John’s been unfaithful for a while.”

”What makes you say that?”

“He leased an apartment near the studio, and now he’s there more than he’s home. I kept telling myself it was because he’s focused on his career, but a part of me suspected what he was doing. I just didn’t want to face it.”

“I’m so sorry, Stella. Does Tony know?”

“Not yet. I haven’t been able to reach him. He hasn’t answered his phone since yesterday afternoon.”

“I’m sure he’ll help you any way he can.”

“I know, but, it’s weird. I don’t want to sleep with him anymore,” Stella said thoughtfully. “I wonder if I only did it to get back at John for being so...what’s the word? Neglectful? Did I even have a real marriage? Did John ever really care about me? He was all roses and gifts and kindness when we were dating. Once we were married that changed, and fast. But the good news is, seeing him and that woman last night has shone a light on how things really are. I’m determined to take control of my life. For the first time ever, I’m going to be my own person, and I’ll be damned if I ever let another man treat me the way he did.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

IN HIS EXECUTIVE OFFICEat Continental Pictures, John was uneasy. He couldn’t shake the feeling someone had been watching him the night before. It was so strong at the time, he’d stopped his fervent pumping to stare at the open doorway. Though there was no-one there, he’d hastily withdrawn his stiff shaft, pulled on his trousers, and stepped out into the hall.

It had been quiet and empty.

Closing and locking his office door, he silently cursed himself for not having done it in the first place. But then the shapely girl had stripped off and stretched out on the floor. He’d quickly removed his clothes and joined her. Now, in the light of day, he regretted bedding the young woman. She could make things awkward if she wanted to.
