CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
GOOSE BUMPS POPPEDacross Matt’s arms.
Her tone was extraordinary.
She was pitch perfect.
Her voice was rich, and as clear as any he’d heard.
He was blown away.
“Damn!” he mumbled when she stopped.
“So...?” she asked, clearly brimming with confidence though her eyes were filled with anxiety.
“I loved it. If you play your cards right, and don’t try to blackmail your way to success, you just might have a shot. I’ll make sure the right people show up to hear you. Do you have anyone looking out for you? A manager? Agent?”
“Duh! If I did, would I be here begging you to let me sing? Although...Tony!He’s my manager.”
“Does he know that?” Matt asked with a chuckle.
“He will, though I think he already sees himself that way.”
“You are something else, Heather Ramsey. This is over for now. I need to get back.”
But she suddenly threw her arms around him and began thanking him profusely.
As he returned her hug, he wondered why her famous father wasn’t helping her, then a solemn thought crossed his mind. She had boxed him into a corner, and he’d turned the tables on her, but if she’d tried to do something similar to someone else, she might not walk away unscathed. In spite of her promise, it was something he needed to think about.
They started back down the hallway, and as they approached the living room they heard rock music. Walking in, they found a dark-haired model gliding down the stairs dressed in a turquoise peignoir. Tia was announcing with a microphone at the top of the staircase, and Stephanie was watching from the side of the runway.
“That girl is gorgeous,” Heather murmured. “This sure will be one heck of a party.”
“It seems to be shaping up that way,” Tony remarked, “but I need to speak with Stephanie. Can I trust you to behave yourself?”
“Yes, absolutely,” she replied solemnly, “and thanks again for everything.”
“Don’t make me regret it,” he warned, then bending over, he placed his lips at her ear. “If I do, you will too.”
