“I wanted to respect your privacy, and I knew you’d get around to it. Now you have.”

“Matt...I didn’t know how to tell you. It’s a big deal.”

“It’s only a big deal if we want it to be, and don’t feel you have to tell me what happened between you two.”

“But I want to tell you. Ineedto tell you. I drove out to his office the other night and found him—uh—with someone.”

“Are you saying you walked in on him with another woman?”

“Kind of. He didn’t see me. It was weird standing there and watching. I was sort of frozen for a second, then I really flipped out.”

“Of course you did!”

“But I don’t know why! I don’t love him, maybe I never did, yet seeing him like that really upset me. Now I couldn’t care less. In fact, I’m grateful. It’s propelled me into taking action.”

“Perhaps he won’t be as difficult if he’s seeing someone else.”

“He’ll be difficult because that’s who he is,” she said with a groan. “He loves drama.”

“I’m sorry you’re going through such a rough time,” Matt murmured, holding her tightly. “At least the worst is over now. You know what you want, and more importantly, what you don’t want.”

“You’re right, and please understand, even if you and I hadn’t found each other I’d still be leaving him. But now I have to get out of that house right away. I’m just not sure what to do.”

“Listen, if you want to live alone I’ll help you find you the right place,” Matt offered. “If not, you can live here. Whatever you choose to do I’ll support you one-hundred percent. If you want to work, I’ll help you figure that out as well. Actually, I just had an idea. I bet Stephanie and Tia would love it if you worked with them. They can use all the help they can get.”

“Oh, my gosh! You’re absolutely right. That’s a fabulous suggestion. During the rehearsal Stephanie made a comment about needing a full-time assistant.”

“There you go!” Matt said triumphantly.

“And she has a pool house. I wonder if she’d let me stay here in exchange for work. I’ll pop over there when I leave and talk to her.”

“That’s a great idea, and I have another one,” Matt said with a grin. “You want to come to the party, right?”

“Of course I do, but I can’t stand the thought of being there with John.”

“Help Stephanie dress the models, and tell John they need you. When you arrive, bolt upstairs and don’t come down until after the show. There’ll be a ton of people here. He’ll be easy to avoid, and I’ll help you.

“Matt Montgomery, you’re brilliant.”

“Thank you, ma’am,” he said with a salute, but as the words left his lips the doorbell chimed. “Dammit, that will be the caterers, but stay here, relax for a little while. There’s no reason you have to get up.”

“Actually, there is,” she said with a sigh. “John will probably be home sometime this morning, and if I want to see Stephanie I have to get my skates on.”

“Ah, right. I’ll be back up as soon as I show these people around the kitchen.”

She watched him pull on his jeans and a T-shirt and hurry from the room, then took hold of his pillow and hugged it against her body.

The days ahead would be tough.

She’d return the cash he’d given her, but she was determined not to take a penny from her father, so until the divorce was settled money would be a problem. Staying in the pool house and working for Stephanie was the answer if she was open to the idea.

“You look positively irresistible,” Matt exclaimed, breaking into her thoughts as he unexpectedly walked back in.

“I do?”

“You are temptation personified.”

She laughed.
