“And, you,” she began, brushing her fingertip across his cheek, “what can I say? You’re an amazing agent. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

The memory of the ugly scene in his office flashed through his mind. She’d been blessed with beauty and talent, and he couldn’t understand how she could be so completely self-centered. She truly was the definition of a narcissist.

“You’re a woman of many talents,” he replied. “I’m sure you’d manage just fine.”

“Possibly, but I don’t want to find out.”

“Jennifer, how are things withThe Teacup?” Jerry interjected. “Any issues?”

“Terry’s been an absolute sweetheart,” she began. “I must tell you about something that happened yesterday.”

As she launched into the story, Matt seized the opportunity to excuse himself and hurry away.

MATT WASN’T WORRIEDabout Heather’s performance, but he’d only ever seen her in beach clothes, and he was concerned about how she’d present herself. Searching her out, he finally spotted her long, shimmering hair, and moved through the crowd to reach her.

“Heather!”

As she turned, he broke into a wide smile. She looked fabulous. The unique black dress flattered her figure and gave her just the right amount of show biz glitz.

“Wow, you look great. Where did you get that amazing outfit?”

“Thanks, Stephanie made it for me.”

“You’re kidding? She’s really talented,” he remarked as Tony stepped up to join them.

“Hi, Matt. Looks like this party is off to a great start.”

“Hey, Tony. So far, so good.”

“Uh, Matt,” Heather said, lowering her voice, “about that other thing, I’m really, really sorry. I was just so desperate to be heard I—“

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, cutting her off with a wink. “Are you ready to wow everyone?”

“I’ve been ready my whole life, and I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to thank you for giving me this chance.”

“Sing your heart out...literally,” Matt replied. “Don’t think, just sing the story. That’s the key.”

“That’s great advice,” Tony exclaimed. “There’s one other thing. We’ve decided to change her name. She’ll be known as Lark.”

“That’s perfect. I love it. Okay, Lark. As soon as the fashion show is over get yourself into the den.”

“I won’t be watching the show. I’m going in there now to practice.”

“Good for you. I’ll see you there in—whoa—it’s 10:15 already. I’ll see you there in about 45 minutes.”

Standing on her toes, she kissed him on the cheek.

“You’re the best, Matt,” she said softly, “and I will find a way to thank you and make up for what I did. I swear it.”

UPSTAIRS IN THE MODEL’Sguest suite, Stella was nervously staring out a window at the dark, windy night. John still hadn’t arrived, and he wasn’t answering his cell or the house phone.

“Stella, are you okay?” Stephanie asked, glancing up from the garment she’d been checking.

“I have a really weird feeling,” Stella murmured, looking across at her.
