He sighed. “I know this doesn't justify my involvement, but I wanted to keep that from happening to you. You have a place with us. You have support from their parents, and you’re on the right path. I thought I was protecting you. You’ve been through too much. I didn't want you to get hurt.”

I could feel the truth behind his words, and the ice around my heart cracked a little. “Why would I get hurt?”

“Because I’m pushing my own experiences and biases of the other guys and the girls onto you. You might get along with the girls. You could be what brings them together and makes them realize we can all be friends again. You might meet the guys and become friends with them even though I don’t have much in common with them anymore. I was being stupid and selfish.”

I understood now. He had a past with these people. He knew them and made a judgment call. It didn’t mean I agreed.

“I want the chance to form my own opinions,” I said as firmly as I could manage.

“Of course. I’ll call them myself when you’re ready.”

I nodded and relaxed, pushed my legs out until my feet were in his lap.

His big goofy grin appeared, and his eyes flashed to mine. “Do you forgive me?”

I pretended to think about it before nodding.

His shoulders slouched, and he leaned back, taking one of my feet in his hands and gentle rubbing. “Cute socks. You nerd.”

I laughed, “Hey, they were a gift.”

He chuckled and after a moment looked at me. “Do you have any other questions? I was being serious when I said I would answer anything I could.”

This was my opportunity.
