Luca ran a hand through his hair, his sign of extreme discomfort or frustration. “I don’t speak for them. I’m just telling you what I’ve overheard.”

“How do we get them to tell us without admitting how we found out?” Aaron asked. “I need to know what my parents know and how they feel about it.”

“Are the attacks public knowledge?” I looked at Luca who nodded. “Maybe bring it up that way. What information they offer will tell you what they know.”

“Yeah, you’re right. We should all do that.” He glanced around, and everyone agreed.

“This was not how I expected this to go,” Gavin said.

“None of us did,” Sky whispered.

“I’m sorry. I know you all hate me already, for a variety of reasons, but you should all know the truth.”

Did she plan on bringing up her problem with the six of us dating as a segue to this? Her constant disruptions were a lot to take. Maybe this was why everyone but CeeCee was wary of her.

“Avalon, what’s your number? We can start a group thread and keep everyone updated with what we uncover.” Sean held up his phone, and I recited my number for all of them.

A tiny thrill shot through me at being able to contact them whenever I wanted, rather than relying on the guys.

“I am happy I met you all. I had no idea it was going to turn into a secret mission for all of us, but I want us to work together.”

I wasn’t sure what else to say. The past slipped quickly away in light of the news. No one cared about how long it took to meet, and my relationship with the guys was suddenly a side note.

The guys stood and came toward me and Luca. They were already making plans about how to get answers. I said bye to Tyson, Aaron, and Sean before they hurried off. Gwyneth nodded as she passed, but CeeCee stopped.

“Can I talk to you really fast?”

I followed her to the edge of the gazebo, far enough away that the guys couldn’t hear, except for Luca, but he was distracted.

“Today was probably pretty overwhelming, but I want you to know that if you have any questions or want to talk, you can call me. There’s a lot of history here.” She gestured around. “And I’m not sure what they’ve told you about me and Gwyneth, but I promise I’m not as bad as I’ve likely come across. Puberty is hard enough without pressure from your supernatural parents drilling into you how important it is to continue the Society line and keep our people going.” She let out a laugh. “That sounds more dramatic than it really was, but we can talk about what really happened soon. With Gwyn too. She’s hard to get to know at first, but she’s the fiercest, most loyal person I know.”

“Thanks.” I let out a slow breath. “I’m really looking forward to getting to know you . . . both of you.”

She grinned then hurried to catch up to where Gwyneth was waiting for her.
