Twenty-Three

A knockon the door woke me the next morning.

“Avalon, we have news,” Daniel called.

I slid my legs over the side of the bed and went to the door, opening it to find him and Tessa waiting for me.

“Morning, sorry for the early wake-up call, but today’s the day,” Daniel explained.

I looked between the two of them. “The day for what?”

“You and Sky are being sent in.” Tessa grinned.

“Really?” I put a hand on the door frame. Everything that happened over the weekend pushed the mission to the back of my mind.

“Everything’s lined up, and they pulled your employee files to fill the positions while the regulars are on vacation,” Daniel finished then pulled out his phone. “We need to be there in an hour and a half, so you have about thirty minutes to get ready.”

“Okay.” A million thoughts were fighting for priority.

“Do you have professional clothing?” Tessa asked.

I ran through my closet in my mind. I had a handful of dresses that would work, but no pants. “I should have enough for a week.”

“Good.” She nodded. “If it goes longer than that, you can borrow from me, or we can go shopping this weekend.”

“Okay.” I blamed my repeated words on still being sleepy.

Gavin stepped out of his room down the hall. “What’s going on?”

“Sky and Avalon are starting their mission today,” Daniel explained as he slid his phone in his pocket and headed to the back stairs.

“You should hurry,” Tessa reminded me.

“Right.” I stepped back into the room to pull on my shoes and grab my phone and keys.

Gavin was waiting and walked with me to the front door. “Good luck. Let me know how things are going when you can.”

“I will.” I smiled, despite my nerves.

He kissed me quickly, then I took off toward my house. I’d worry about getting my car later.

I slipped inside and listened at the base of the stairs for any sounds. Silence. Dad should be up and ready by now, but I didn’t have time to investigate. I went through the kitchen and nearly screamed when I saw Juliet sitting at the island with a cup of coffee in her hands, already dressed for work.

She looked up from her phone and smiled. “Good morning.”

“Morning.” Could she hear the catch in my voice? Even though this was going according to the plan Gavin and I made, I thought I would have more time to prepare.

“Did you finish your project?”

“Yeah, we finished around midnight, so I just stayed there.”

I glanced down at my phone and mustered up the courage. “I didn’t have a charger so my phone’s dead, and I need to let Gavin know I don’t need a ride this morning. Can I borrow yours?”

“Sure.” She handed it over without a moment of hesitation. While I held it, she got up and refilled her mug.

Gavin made me practice the steps over and over until I could do it in under a minute. I downloaded the app that would send us everything she did and selected the app it would hide under. We were careful to choose one that wouldn’t show up in her settings or downloaded applications. This one leeched onto any app that wasn’t native to the phone. Gavin recommended her email since she was unlikely to delete that anytime soon.

The circle showing the download’s progress paused for a heartbeat before jumping to complete. I let out a small sigh and set it on the counter. “Thanks so much. I’ve got to go get ready. Have a good day!”
