Chapter 13

NIALL

If they take her, they’ll run tests. They’ll know what she is. Theo screamed at me as if I hadn’t already considered that.

We couldn’t let her true identity get out, especially not where the council could have access. But we couldn’t keep her here either. The healers weren’t specialized in curses. They couldn’t help her.

We needed a different solution.

Did you ask your parents about another facility?

I haven’t heard back yet.

Ask again. We need to control where she goes.

He gave me a slight nod and turned away to use his phone.

His family was by far the most well connected, besides Saige’s grandparents. It was a risk reaching out to them, but Masie knew that. She must have decided it was worth it.

They aren’t confident enough to recommend a place. They don’t want her information getting in the wrong hands either.

Fuck. Saige’s lovely family was our last option.

“My parents will be arriving soon,” Masie announced. “They request that you greet them at the gates and escort them to see Ms. Williams.”

Headmaster Asshat bared his teeth in what was likely meant to be a smile and turned on his heel.

The healer watched him leave before coming closer. “I really am sorry for involving him, but he was listed as her guardian in her file. We have to get her in the hands of people who can help her as soon as possible.”

“I understand. I appreciate all the work you're doing.” Masie stood in front of Saige’s bed, putting herself between any threats and her niece.

The healer nodded before excusing herself and leaving.

I dropped the spell, relieved to be able to speak again.

“What did they say?” Kaden asked the moment we were alone.

Masie faced us. “They know a powerful healer they trust. He doesn’t practice at any facilities anymore, but they’re confident they can get him to treat her. He’ll come to their home.” She blinked a few times. “I’ll stay with her the whole time. I won’t let anything else happen to her.”

That was a big sacrifice for her. From what Saige has said, her grandparents basically turned their backs on both of their daughters long ago. They were only stepping in now to protect themselves. They probably didn’t want news to spread that they have a hybrid granddaughter. Their reasoning didn’t matter, not right now. The point was, we had another option.

“Can we use a portal to move her?” Sai asked, staring down at Saige’s peaceful face.

“We’ll have to,” Mrs. Hedgings replied. “I’m assuming they didn’t bring the jet if they’re already arriving.”

Masie nodded. “They can portal her from outside the gates.”

“How do you know the headmaster will let them take her?” Theo asked.

“Because they’re coming with their team of lawyers.” Masie sighed. “My father was already in a meeting with them, so he’s using all the intimidation he can gather to get what he wants.”

“Can we come?” Sai asked.

No. We couldn’t.

Mrs. Hedgings broke the news for me. “Unfortunately, no. It would raise far too many questions. We don’t want to draw more attention to the five of you. So far, the administration hasn’t had cause to look into any of your records. We want to keep it that way for as long as possible, so you’ll have to continue on as normal.”

Theo slumped his shoulders, but no one argued.
