“Right,” I chuckled.

Well. Except for last night, but that was an exception.

“Saige! I’m going to be a pilot for Halloween! Dad got me wings!” Aiden took off running and returned seconds later to shove his hand in front of the camera. “Look!”

Mom pulled him back enough that I could make out the gold pin some airlines handed out to kids.

“Aiden, that’s amazing! You’re going to look so real that people are going to ask why you’re going trick or treating and not off flying.”

He giggled and nodded. “Yeah, Mom ordered a hat, and I’m going to wear pants and a white shirt just like pilots do.”

His innocent joy was a balm to my heart. I missed him so much. I wanted to go home and take him around our neighborhood like we’d done since he was born. This would be his first time going without me.

“Are you excited about all the candy?”

“Yes!” He ran around in a circle before throwing himself on the couch next to Dad.

“I can’t wait to hear all about it. Take lots of pictures for me, okay?”

“Kay!”

Mom lifted the phone to face her. “Are you sure you’re feeling all right? Nothing’s off?”

I debated for a second about telling them about the vision, but I kept enough from them. I didn’t want too many secrets between us. “I did have a strange . . .” finding code words they would understand without alarming Aiden was harder than the demonstration in science. “Daydream?”

Mom’s brows creased, and Dad leaned forward. “Not a nightmare?”

I shook my head. “I was awake. I just saw something.”

“What was it?” Mom asked, then told Aiden to go find his toy in the other room.

With him gone and Brielle too young to understand, I quickly ran through the entire experience from the emotions I felt right before to what I feared it could mean.

Neither of them said anything. The vision was a lot for me to process. I couldn’t imagine what they were thinking.

“That’s terrifying, honey. But this is all speculation, right? I mean, you haven’t heard of anything happening.” Dad paused. “Like what happened to Amber and Peter.”

“Not yet. There have been rumors but nothing like that.”

They both nodded, looking unsettled.

“As long as you stay on campus, you’ll be safe?” Mom asked.

“I think so.” That’s what I was told. I had to believe it.

“Okay, then you’re exactly where you need to be.” She forced a smile, and Dad put his arm around her shoulders.

“Even though we miss you more than anything.” He glanced down at Bri asleep in his arm. “I should get her to bed. I love you, kid.”

“I love you too.”

I waited, hoping Bri would wake up and ask for me, but she didn’t stir.

“I love you, sweetie,” Mom echoed.

“I love you, Saige!” Aiden called.

“I love you guys.” I waved and waited for mom to hang up. Once the call ended, I set my phone to the side and dropped my head back against the couch.
