Chapter 22

It started with a snap.

I looked around the classroom, but no one else seemed to have heard anything. I went back to the worksheet Mrs. Brooks handed out.

Then a smell made me cringe. Old. Death. Decay. I covered my nose with my hand, trying to be as discreet as possible.

But when my vision blurred, then cleared—clearer than ever before—I knew something was wrong.

“Niall,” I whispered, unmoving.

“What,” he grunted.

“Niall. Something’s wrong.”

He finally turned toward me, and I met his gaze.

His eyes widened, and he jumped out of his chair and pulled me up by the elbows.

“Mr. Kelly? Where do you think you and Ms. Williams are going?” Mrs. Brooks stood with her hands on her hips in the front of the room.

“She’s feeling ill. I’m going to take her to get some air.”

Before our teacher could protest, Niall had us out of the room and rushed to the main entrance of the tower.

Once we were outside, everything got worse. It was too loud. Too bright. Too many smells.

“Niall,” I groaned and fell to my knees while covering my face in my hands.

“Shit, Saige. Hold on.” He kept one hand on my back. A moment later, he was shouting. “Get here now. The tower. Yes. No, it can’t wait.”

I didn’t know who was on the other end of the call, but he didn’t bother giving more of an explanation or even saying bye.

“It’s okay, Saige. You’re going to be fine.”

“I don’t feel good.”

No, that wasn’t right. It wasn’t that I felt bad. I just felt entirely off. Nothing was how it was supposed to be.

“I know. Just stay calm and keep breathing. We’ll get you out of here in a second.”

Out of here? “Where?”

“There you are!” he roared. “Come help her.”

“I am,” Sai said, and two more hands were on me. “What’s going on, Saige?”

“She’s shifting,” Niall explained.

“What?” I cried. I was? How did he know when I didn’t?

“Look at her eyes.” He held my face in his hands, and Sai appeared over me.

“Shit. We’ve got to get her home.” He straightened and pulled me up. They each put an arm around me and half-carried me back to Phoenix Hall.

I wanted to correct him. That wasn’t home. That was our dorm. Our apartment. Home was on the other side of the country with my family.

My bonded were my family too. They were my home.
