“No, but his daughter is. Do it for him.”

I wish I could talk to them and ask them more about Peter. Why he was so respected? Why they were loyal to him and not his father?

“Well, that might go for the girl, but what about those guys who came with her?”

I shot another nail, hoping no one would come by and check in. I needed their answers.

“I heard that’s her bond. The four of them.”

“Yeah, my wife works in the lodge and says they're all living together in one room.”

I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me whole. Our relationship was being kept like a dirty secret? I thought it was all out in the open.

“There is no such thing as a bond between five. It just doesn't happen. Two, maybe three, max.”

“No, I'm telling you. They're all together.”

“What's that supposed to mean?”

“That ain't normal. It has to be a sign of something.”

“Yeah, a sign that the Council wants them, and we're hiding them.”

“So you really think that it's more than her being a hybrid?”

“Yeah, she's special. Plus, having four bonded mates. Yeah, there’s no way the Council is going to let that go without taking a look.”

“That doesn't mean something bad will happen.”

“You ever hear of anyone going to see the Council and coming back? I don't think so.”

That was it. I wanted to leave. I wanted to run away from hearing this, but I kept working, trying to block out their words before they could sink in.

We were in danger.

But I thought we were safe here.

We’d been promised that we'd be safe here. But judging by what I overheard, not everyone was as loyal as the Alpha thought. When it came down to it, we couldn't count on the pack keeping us safe. Not all of us. Hopefully Saige, but the rest of us were on our own.

Nothing changed. We might as well be at the Academy. At least there, we could go to classes and continue to learn.

We were sitting ducks, waiting for the Council’s hunters to come back and claim us.

It might not even take that much. I had a feeling if the opportunity presented itself to get rid of us, the pack members would take it.

And the thing was, I couldn't even blame them. They hadn't asked for us to come. They hadn't offered to help us. The Alpha forced us into their compound and the pack, and they were just supposed to accept it. Even with all the dangers we presented.

I'd be angry, too, if a threat moved into our lives. I wanted to protect our family. My mates.

At least now I knew we only had ourselves to count on. We had to strengthen our bond and each other.

I finished my shift, then hurried back to the main lodge, hoping everyone else was already home. When I opened the door, Saige was sitting on the bed reading while Sai stretched out at her feet with his eyes closed and his arms behind his head.

Theo and Niall were on the couches. I slammed the door behind me, and everyone turned to look at me.

“What's going on?” Saige asked.

“We need to train.”
