How? Why? I wanted to ask but didn’t want to push her to tell me more than she was ready for.

“They were working with a group of vampires, setting up protection spells and helping them settle in a remote town. Word spread, and some loyalists arrived and burned the town to the ground. They didn’t think witches and vampires should be collaborating like that. They, like the Council, don’t think species should mingle.” She paused, biting her lip. “They killed everyone that was there. Said it was unnatural and impure.”

I had no words. I couldn’t fathom anyone doing that. Those people were innocent.

“It’s why I came here. I needed sanctuary, even if it meant being looked down upon by a few shifters. It’s safer to be here where I know the risks, than chancing a run in with those lunatics.”

“How did they get away with it? Why didn’t they get arrested or something?” This was another example how what I didn’t know about the Supernatural Society. Laws and punishments weren’t something we covered at the Academy.

“The Council would have had to send people to track them down, and they didn’t seem bothered.” She swallowed. “It’s why I push you. It’s why I need you and your bond to do more. You five have the potential to be incredibly powerful. You guys can stop disgusting, evil people from hurting others.”

“That’s a lot to expect from us,” I cautioned.

“But it’s not impossible. If you put in the work, I think it will be pretty difficult to stop you guys.”

I wished her confidence was infectious, but it made me feel weighed down by expectations. As much as I wanted to change things and make the council protect and support hybrids and large bonds, I wasn’t sure we were the ones that could make it happen.

But starting with being able to protect ourselves was necessary. I couldn’t imagine losing the guys, or the rest of my family. If there was anything I could do to prevent that, then I had to learn.

Chapter 15

Knocking on someone's door wasn’t illegal—even if we found out their address in a less than ethical way—but just showing on their porch still felt like breaking rules.

“Are you sure this is it?” Kaden asked for the third time.

Niall didn’t bother responding.

Footsteps sounded, then the door swung open, revealing a man I guessed to be in his thirties, with short black hair and dark eyes.

He examined the three of us. “May help you?”

“I hope so,” I admitted.

A light of recognition went on in his eyes. “You’re the Alpha’s granddaughter, right?”

“Yeah.” I swallowed before continuing. “I'm sure you've heard about––”

“Your bond,” he finished for me. A smile started at the edges of his mouth. “I had a feeling we'd be seeing you eventually. How did you hear about us?”

I glanced at Niall before dropping my head.I pushed for us to meet them, especially after my talk with Serene, but I didn’t want to make them mad.

“I found you guys,” he answered. “I work in the main office and found your information. Sorry, that's probably a breach of some sort of privacy.”

“We’re all pack.” The man brushed off our concern and waved us inside and to the living room. “I'm Dustin, by the way. This is Joey and Emily, my mates. Guys, this is Saige Stewart.”

Another man and a woman stood from the couch.

Emily stepped forward and offered her hand to me. “It's nice to finally meet you. I wanted to introduce myself earlier, but there always seemed to be a group around you.”

The warm welcome caught me off guard but eased my anxiety. They had expected us to show up at some point.

“Why don't you guys take a seat?” She gestured to the other couch. “Sorry, you'll have to remind me of your names.”

Kaden and Niall introduced themselves again.

“What can we do for you?” she asked pleasantly.

“We know that . . .” I tried to start and then I shook my head. “Actually, we don't know very much.”
