“Let's go.”

“Everyone move!” Steven ordered, and the crowd parted.

We carried him as gently as possible. I tried to be careful about jostling him, but it was impossible as we tried to find our footing in the snow. As long as we didn't slip and drop him, he would be fine.

Vic met us a few yards away from the clinic. “I'm sorry I was in with another emergency. I got here as fast as I could. Is everything okay?”

“His bone needs to be set properly. I did what I could out there, but we might need an X-ray to make sure everything aligns before he starts healing on his own.”

“Let's get him in.” Vic opened the doors and held them for us as we carried the injured man through.

I didn't have time to think or process as we worked on stabilizing the leg properly. It wasn't until he was resting, and the situation was no longer dire, that I was able to process what had happened.

Not that I'd run out when we heard the screaming, but what the crowd had been saying when I was trying to help him.

I looked from Vic to Steven. “I didn't realize how prejudiced this pack was against our kind.”

“I want to say it's not normally like that, but there are a percentage of the pack who would prefer we only had wolf shifters here. It's not the majority, but unfortunately, you met most of them today,” Steven sighed.

Vic nodded. “I don't deal with much of that normally, but when a crowd comes together and one of their people is in crisis, it tends to bring out the ugly. They'll be grateful once they see him healed.”

“I hope so.” It didn't change anything. I wouldn't stop working with these patients, but it was hard to accept our safe haven wasn't as perfect as I thought.

When I walked out of the clinic at the end of my shift, Kevin and Jerry waited for me.

“Hey, we heard about the accident at the school. You acted so fast. By the time anyone else could gather supplies, you were already on your way back.” Jerry patted me on the back. “Must be that vampire speed.”

“Yeah, that’s something I wouldn’t mind having,” Kevin grinned. “You did a great job.”

“Thanks, guys.”

After hearing the comments coming from the crowd, I wasn’t sure how welcomed my abilities were, but it helped to know my coworkers still had my back.

“You should really come tonight to the game. We could use you as a receiver.” Jerry wagged his brows. “Turn on that turbo speed just a bit.”

“Not a bad idea,” Kevin chuckled.

“The other players wouldn’t mind?”

“Mind?” Jerry asked.

“Me playing?”

Kevin cocked his head. “What do you mean?”

“Not everyone’s cool with me being here. I didn’t want to cause any trouble.”

“Because you’re a vampire?” Jerry asked.

“And a witch,” I added.

“No way. If anything, they’ll enjoy the challenge.”

“You were a hero today. Anyone who thinks otherwise can get lost.” Kevin pointed over his shoulder. “The field is behind the lodge. We’ll see you later.”

A hero? That was a stretch, but it would be nice to get to know more of the pack members. If they thought I would be accepted, then I was going to give it a shot. We needed to settle in here, and this was a good step forward.
