She smiled. “Our time's up. I’ve got to head to the shop for my shift, and I think your mates are growing impatient.”

“What do you–”

Before I could finish, Kaden spoke in my mind.Come on, baby.

Twisting toward a patch of trees, I saw him and Sai waiting for me.

“I'll see you later,” I told Serene, and she waved before heading to the main road.

I gave each of my mates a hug, then looped my arms through theirs as we walked the path leading to our home.

Kaden launched into our evening plans. “So, I was thinking for dinner tonight, we could–”

I froze, making him stop mid-sentence. They both turned to me.

“What day is it?” I asked.

It was hard keeping track here. I knew my days as one, two, three. On day one, I worked. On day two, I had tutoring. On day three, I had physical training.

“It's December 18. Why?”

Pain shot through my chest, and I rubbed at it. “It's Hannah's birthday.”

Sai took my hand and squeezed.

“It's her birthday, and I don't even know where she is. I don't know if she's safe.”

“The Alpha that he would let us know if anything happened to her,” Kaden reminded me.

“But he might not know. His sources can’t stay on campus. She could have been taken away for all we know.”

“Don't think like that.” Sai rubbed my back, but I shook my head.

“I hate that we're safe here and happy, and I don't even know where Hannah and Daniel and our friends are. I don't know how to reach out to them or help them. Hannah’s my best friend, and I can’t even tell her, ‘Happy Birthday,’ after all she's done for me.”

Today, I thought I was getting stronger and that I might be able to make a difference. But in some ways, I was as helpless as ever.

What's the point of all this?

I couldn’t change the bigger picture. We were still in hiding under the protection of the pack because the Council was after us. We were still in danger. We couldn’t go outside the compound because of the threats against us. All because of who we were. It didn’t matter that I had more control over my magic or that we were learning how to work together as a bond. At the end of the day, we couldn’t do anything.

So what's the point?

“Come on. Let's at least have this conversation inside.” Kaden led us along.

I was too distraught to argue. I followed the snowy path back to our house where Niall and Theo waited.

“What's wrong?” Niall asked the second he saw me.

Theo frowned. “What's going on?”

“It’s Hannah’s birthday,” I told them. “I don't know where she is or if she's safe. I don't know if Daniel is okay or if they're together. And we're here doing what?”

Theo stepped forward. “What do you mean? We're training. We're learning. We're doing what we can–”

I cut him off. “Which means absolutely nothing. Our friends are still out there. They're still in danger. We don’t know where our families are. I haven't heard from Masie or my parents. We have no idea what's going on outside of this compound, and yet we're okay with that.”

Theo put his hands on my shoulders. “Because we're happy here. We're safe and doing exactly what we're supposed to be doing.”
