Quinn laughed and then looked at his face. “You’re serious. You actually think you’re good at everything?”

His jaw tightened, and before she could move, he’d grabbed her wrist and was tugging her closer.

“You might want to let her go before I break your face.” The words were a deep growl.

She twisted her wrist, and broke free ignoring the angry presence of Luke Trainer. “You touch me again and you’ll regret it,” she snapped at Sam.

“What she said,” Luke added.

“Back away, country boy,” Sam snarled. “We’re just having a discussion.”

“We are not discussing anything else. You touch me again and I’ll break your face,” Quinn snapped.

“Discussion over.” A large hand jerked Sam back and away from her.

“Luke. I got this.”

“No, I got it.” His green eyes were narrowed and zeroed in on Sam. “You do not lay your hands on this lady, or any lady for that matter, in anger.”

“It’s all right, Luke. Go back to your pumpkin. I have this.” Quinn attempted to defuse the situation again.

“That’s right, Luke, go back to your pumpkin,” Sam taunted.

“Shut up, Sam,” Quinn said.

He turned on her, eyes angry, leaning into her space. “No one tells me to shut up.”

“I just did.” She pushed him hard in the chest, he stumbled backward. “Grow up you moron.”

Mrs. L, who had just arrived with her pumpkin and elderly partner, stuck out a foot. Sam went flying into the smashed pumpkin innards.

Luke moved the few feet to lean over Sam. He bent as if to help him up, but Quinn knew better.

“You come near her again, and I will mess up that pretty face of yours.”

Quinn’s heart absolutely did not sigh looking at the big angry man straightening. She didn’t need people looking out for her. But the silly little flutter in her chest told her she was not immune to it.

“Move it, Quinn,” Luke said. “Before he gets up and we end up brawling in the street. Which I have no problem with, but my nieces and nephews are watching.”

“I’ll stop here,” Quinn said.

“Good idea. You’ve caused enough trouble.” The Celery Stick looked pissed.

“Shut up, Ophelia.”

She looked shocked that Luke had spoken to her that way.

“In fact, roll your own pumpkin. Come on, Quinn. Let’s go.” Luke grabbed her hand and placed it on the pumpkin. “I need to beat my family.”

She was moving seconds later, because he’d nudged her in the back.

“Don’t look back; she can send out laser beams from her eyes,” Piper said. Clearly the Trainers had stopped to watch the argument as they hadn’t reached the finish line yet.

“I handled Sam, Luke.”

“Sure you did; you’re one hell of a woman, Quinn Harper. Now move that fine ass of yours. We have a dinner to win.”

“Is it in the rules you can change partners halfway through the race?” Jack asked.
