“I can’t bake shit.”

She sneezed and made a small moaning sound. He’d heard her moan in the motel room just like that.

“What?” She raised a brow at his look.

“You moaned, and the last time I heard that you were under me.” He went for honesty.

She closed her eyes as if she was in pain, and Luke had to say he was happy about that. Because he was in a world of pain.

“Stop talking like that.”

“I always try to be truthful.” Why did he feel calmer when she was around?

“Take them one of your pastries.” They heard Albert’s voice.

“They won’t want them” was Nixon’s reply.

“You kidding me? Those two will eat anything.”

Luke tried not to look to where this discussion was going on. He wanted Nixon to come out and bring them one of his pastries, but he couldn’t make it happen. Instead he focused on Quinn. Which was no hardship; the woman was cute, even with black eyes.

“I feel like I need to do some investigating of my own over this stuff that’s happening at home,” Quinn said.

“What?” Luke looked from the counter to her.

“That card, that man who wants to buy the farm. I’m going to do some digging.”

“No, you are not.”

She frowned. “Why not?”

“He could be dangerous, and behind what’s happening?”

“I’m calling, not visiting him, Luke.”

“You cannot be serious?”

“Deadly.”

“Absolutely not. You could alert them to the fact you’re curious about their motives. Let Chief Blake do his work.”

“I don’t want to sit and do nothing.” She gave him a hard look. He didn’t care. She was not putting herself in danger, even if it was on the phone.

“Just let him do his job, Quinn.”

She didn’t agree or disagree, which worried him, but he’d keep an eye on her and talk to her dad if need be.

“So have you given any more thought to what’s next for Captain Harper.”

Philly dropped off their hot chocolates. “Pastries are just coming,” she said before leaving again.

Quinn picked up her cup and drank. “This is the best hot chocolate ever.”

“Agreed.”

“I’m definitely leaning toward the Air National Guard. It’s a step down in intensity, and I think I’m ready for that. Ready to see Mom and Dad more. Buy a house and put down some roots.”

“I’m sure they’d enjoy that,” he said calmly, when inside he was doing somersaults. Luke had no idea what he wanted from this woman; the hell of it was, he was sure it was a lot more than a single night. Just being close to her made his body hum. Everything about her intrigued him. The way she tilted her head when she was listening. That bloody dimple. Even with eyes like a panda, she was hot.
