“Did he?” Joe whistled. “You must have him unsettled.”

“But not enough, and that’s for the best. I work away from here and am not sure when I can get home.”

“Love is worth the fight, Quinn.”

She was not going to cry. Climbing to her toes, she pressed a kiss to his cheek. Quinn then walked away from another Trainer brother. It didn’t hurt with this one.

She headed back the way she’d come. Her parents didn’t pick up when she called either of them, so she decided she’d walk. There was no way she was staying in town to bump into another Trainer.

Nash and Luna picked her up after she’d been on the road out of town for a few minutes and dropped her home. After thanking them, she ran inside to the sound of the house phone ringing.

“Hello.”

“Hi, Quinn, it’s Chief Blake. Is your father there?”

“He’s still in town at the celebrations. Can I give him a message?”

The Ryker Falls Chief of Police exhaled. “I tried to find him, but no luck. There have been a few approaches to people who own land bordering your family’s to sell.”

“I just talked to Nash Winter. He said he’d been approached.”

“Yeah, he told me.”

“Are my parents in danger, do you think?”

“I don’t know but you need to stay vigilant. I doubt they’re watching your place, and also doubt they know I’m involved yet. I have asked Dylan to get his guy, Mickey from the FBI, to dig into the name on the card. He can find out most things. I’ll let you know if he comes back with anything.”

“It doesn’t make sense though, Chief Blake. I mean, all these things happening to force Dad out. Surely they didn’t think we’d put them down to Dad’s memory. Or that Mom wouldn’t believe him.”

“Agreed. But I say this in the nicest possible way, Quinn. Your mother likes to talk. It’s possible that she mentioned to someone about her concerns for your father and it made its way to whoever is behind this. Perhaps they thought they could add to your mom’s beliefs and your father’s confusion.”

“But that means they’re nearby.” The words sent a shiver up Quinn’s spine.

“Or closer. A worker or a local.”

“I’ll pass all this on to my parents.”

“Okay and call me for any reason no matter how small.”

“Will do, and thanks, Chief Blake.”

When she’d cut the call, Quinn thought about what to do next. She headed back out the door and went to inspect the outbuildings and see if the workers were still there. They’d gone for the day. They’d repaired what they could, but there was still a lot of work to be done.

Her phone buzzed.

“Hello.”

“So about the bachelorette auction.”

“Bailey?”

“I know Mrs. Howard asked you to do it, and your mom has put the pressure on you too, but you would be a great asset, and I know with you being a fighter pilot a lot of the men would like to win an evening with you to talk about it.”

“Bailey—”

“We need that minivan, Quinn. But not only that, the funds will go to more books in schools. This is the way the town likes to give. Yes, there are those like Ted who could just throw money at the school, but this means it’s a community thing.”

“I’ll have two black eyes by tomorrow, Bailey.”
