The doctor arrived and told them Quinn was doing okay. The bullet had been removed and her wrist set. She had a broken rib and concussion, but considering what she’d been through, she was doing okay.

Her parents went to see her, and he had to stay in the waiting room because he was only a friend. The hell of it was he wanted to be way more than that and he needed to tell her that.

“Quinn wants to see you, Luke,” Mrs. Harper said when she and her husband returned, looking less worried but older.

He ran to the room she was in and entered. The only noise was the beep from the monitors she was hooked up to. She looked small and vulnerable lying there in that sterile bed. He moved to the side of her bed and took her hand.

Her lashes rose.

“Hi.” He kissed her.

“Hi.” Her voice was croaky.

“You feeling better?”

“No.”

He snorted.

“Need to tell you something,” she whispered, her words slurred from the anesthetic.

“Okay.”

“Thanks for saving me.”

“Welcome. Thanks for saving me.”

She tried to frown, and her eyes crossed. “From what?”

“Being an idiot and a coward.”

Her smile was lopsided.

“Love you, Captain Harper.”

“Love you too.”
