“I want to be closer to home.”

“But not too close is my guess, seeing as your mom will be picking out your wedding dress next?”

“Exactly.”

Luke kept his eyes steady on her face. “Is your dad okay, Quinn?”

“Why do you ask?”

“Because he’s had the accident and the fire, plus I heard him saying to Dylan at the movie night that his car battery was flat and yet it had been charged a few hours before.”

She exhaled. “Some things have been happening, and Mom thinks Dad’s losing his mind and that everything can be explained.”

Luke whistled softly. “What do you think?”

Her eyes went from the toes of her boots to his face. “I think he seems the same as he always has to me.”

“So what’s going on then?”

“That’s the problem; I don’t know. It’s not like Dad to let these things happen.”

“So get him to a doctor.”

“I think I got him to agree today, but he’s stubborn.”

“Joe’s the most stubborn of all of us,” Luke said.

“I take after my dad,” Quinn said.

“He’s not as pretty as you.” He was closer now.

“I really am sorry you’re hurting, Luke.” She’d said the words quickly, uncomfortable with the flattery.

“Thanks for just standing there talking to me while I got my shit together.”

“You listened to me the other night, so it’s only fair.”

“Got any candy? I could do with some about now.”

Quinn dug into her pocket and pulled out a small packet, then handed it to him. He didn’t take it; instead his hands settled on her shoulders. Before she could step back, he’d leaned in and kissed her softly.

“You taste sweet.” His words brushed her lips.

She couldn’t stop her fingers curling into his shirt as he deepened the kiss. One large hand wrapped around the back of her head and held her. His thumb raised her chin to just the right angle.

This was different from last time. He hadn’t held her then, just kissed her. This was consuming. The need that rose up inside her was fierce. She felt surrounded by him. Arms, legs pressed to hers. She felt the hardness of his arousal against her belly.

“So good.” His lips skated down her neck before returning to hers.

Quinn’s breasts felt heavy, and heat pooled between her thighs. Desire thrummed through her. Just when she was sure she’d melt to a puddle at his feet, he eased back. Both hands cupped her face. His forehead rested on hers while the breath rasped in and out of those wicked lips. Then he took the candy she clutched in her hand and walked away.

“Ah, Luke?” she managed to get out, head still reeling from that kiss.

“Yeah?” He turned a few feet from where she stood.

“I-If you want to f-fly anywhere, Dad’s plane is there. I can take you.”

He gave her a small smile. “Thanks.”

“Do you want my number?”

He walked back to her. “Sure. I’ll talk to the others and call if they want to use your dad’s plane.”

His voice was a bit deeper but he seemed in control, unlike her.

He put the number into his phone while inside her a fire raged. He then touched her cheek and walked away again, leaving her standing there reeling.
