Quinn went to the counter and pulled out her phone. She handed her credit card over to the sales assistant. “We’ll take the beanies and the jacket he’s wearing.”

They left the shop minutes later.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, Nixon.”

“I’ve never had a new coat before.”

And that just about broke her heart.

“Well, now you do.” She put her arm around his shoulders. “Mrs. McMillan and I can tell you that everything is going to be okay, Nixon. I can tell you how good those guys who are your brothers are. But you have to see and believe that for yourself. But I will say that you should give them a chance.”

Her phone signaled a text, so she checked it.

“We need to head to the police station now.”

The boy nodded, and they were soon walking that way.

She hoped that whoever signed off on Nixon’s future would let this scared and lonely boy go home with the Trainer brothers to their loud, boisterous family. Because the thought of him staying here where his father would one day initiate him into the motorcycle club was not something Quinn wanted to contemplate.
