"You want to try and manipulate me with tears again?"

I didn't want to dignify that accusation with a response, so I just ignored it.

"You can't treat me like this, Michael. And neither can your family."

"The way I see it, you want things your way too, so that's the pot calling the kettle black, don't you think?"

"I wanted to talk like normal people! What kind of people are you anyway who think money can buy everything?!"

"Are we down to insults now, Jade?"

"Is this the kind of father you want to be? The kind who tries to take a mother away from his son?"

"Depends on the mother."

I pulled my hair in frustration. "You are impossible! And you are insane if you think Robin will ever love you if you do that!"

I hung up and threw the phone to the other side of the bed. Trying to talk to Michael was like pulling teeth; I didn't have the energy to deal with him anymore. My blood was boiling. Talking to Michael finally motivated me to get up and head to the bathroom. It was time to wash away any trace of him from my body.

One thing was clear now. The fight was on.

Michael

I groaned when I heard the sound of drilling. Our new offices were still getting some final touches, and I regretted not working out of my hotel for the rest of the day. It seemed like there was always just one thing left, and the technicians setting up our network needed to speed it the hell up. I rubbed my temples and looked at Daisy, who seemed unbothered by everything. She was focused on something on her laptop and didn't break rhythm as she drank her coffee.

How was I supposed to get any work done with all this damn noise?! I had been managing fine with all the work before, but today it felt worse—a little more distracting than usual. I was going through the factory's final blueprints, and it seemed like I had been staring at the same page for an hour now. The lines were starting to merge, and it looked more like a maze than designs for one of the most high-tech buildings we had ever worked on.

"Are we still constructing something? It feels like they are taking the building apart!"

Daisy took a sip from her cup and sighed. "They are just tidying up some cables, remember? They will be done this afternoon."

I looked at my watch and gritted my teeth. It was only ten. I couldn't take a few more minutes of this commotion, let alone a few more hours!

"And they couldn't do this after hours? Is anyone even getting any work done in here?"

"Is something the matter, boss?"

Her response surprised me, and I wondered what the hell she was talking about. Was she really so unbothered by this, or was I making a mountain out of a molehill? Daisy was always honest with me, something I appreciated, given how vital she was in my day-to-day movements, so it had to be true if she was calling me out on something.

"Why do I feel like I will get one of your reality checks?"

She had given me a few of those over the years in instances where my mother would claim I was beingunreasonable. I didn't appreciate that word very much since it was usually in cases where everyone else around me was incompetent, and I was expected to be understanding for some reason. Daisy would usually remind me how everyone was human, and I couldn't expect them to act or think like me. I don't know what that was supposed to make me since I am also human but always manage to get things done.

"Because you were complaining about the paint samples not being white enough but then chose the same shade that's there already," she replied calmly, looking at me as if I should already know that I was being crazy.

I opened my mouth to argue but stopped, realizing she was probably right. Since Jade's visit to my hotel, I had felt out of sorts. It was difficult wanting someone you intensely disliked, and that summed up Jade to a T. I was also anxious about getting to know Robin, and I didn't know what to do for the first time in my life. These were unchartered waters, and I feared I might drown if I didn't figure it all out soon.

"I'm sending you everything you need to look at today, so you can work from home if you need to," Daisy continued, then looked back at her screen.

In my opinion, we all needed to work from home, but she was right. I needed to get out of here, and I knew that Daisy would have everything under control in the office. And I could always come back if I was needed. I took everything that I needed and told her to alert my driver. She replied with a smile, never looking up.

Once I got back to the hotel, I called Jade.

"If you called to harass me, I'm not in the mood today," she said coldly as she answered the phone.

"Come over. We need to talk."
