She sipped her orange juice. “Assumption.”

They fell into a comfortable silence as they finished their meal.

“I really am sorry for how I acted last night,” he told her when they stood from their table and made their way into the Caribbean sunshine.

She bumped him with her shoulder as she shrugged. The slight warmth of her bare skin against his sent a jolt through him. “I wasn’t being entirely fair. Those guys were okay. They just weren’t for me.” She stopped and turned to him. “Just so you know,ifI had been at the event of my own choosing, I would’ve put a check by your name . . . only your name.”

Her quiet confession made his heart race. Tamping down his excitement, he nodded solemnly. “But you weren’t looking for anything. I get it.”

She pulled her bottom lip between her teeth. She’d done the same thing last night. He still didn’t know how she made something so innocent so damn sexy. “You’re dangerous, Seth.”

Her words surprised him. “Dangerous? How? Because of my job?” True, his job carried risks, but that didn’t meanhedid.

Her piercing gaze still studied him. “Something like that,” she whispered with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “I’ll see you around.” She turned to walk away.

“I thought we were hanging out,” he called, desperate to have just a few more minutes of her time.

She cast him a look over her shoulder. “Ashley and I have a spa appointment. I’m sure we’ll see you later.”

He stood, watching her hips sway slightly as she sashayed away. He probably should’ve taken Ashley’s advice and avoided Courtney. They didn’t know each other. It wouldn’t matter if she stayed mad at him forever. But the thought of her possibly upset with him hadn’t sat well in his stomach. Last night she’d claimed to be a deer, so why did he sense a tiger sleeping beneath her skin?

CHAPTERFIVE

“So,you and Seth are just going to hang out and what, do each other’s nails?” Ashley settled into the massage chair as the nail technician rubbed lotion into her feet.

Courtney should’ve waited until after the appointment to tell her friend about her breakfast and subsequent talk with Seth. This was supposed to be relaxing, but Ashley seemed determined to use the “quiet time” to give Courtney the third degree.

“They give manis and pedis here,” she answered instead. “If he needs those services, he can make an appointment.”

Ashley snorted. “And what services are you providing, Ms. Fowler?”

“Not funny,” Courtney sang, but she was smiling. “I think I could like hanging out with him. That’s all.”

Ashley pushed up from her chair, only to have her foot yanked back. “You’ve seen Seth, right?”

“Yes. It would be pretty rude of me not to look at him during the conversations we’ve had.”

“And did you notice he’s hot?”

Of course, she’d noticed. Only a blind mole could not notice that the man was attractive. “What’s your point?” she asked by way of answer.

“You think you could like hanging out with him and just ignore his hotness? People don’t hang out with Seth for his sparkling personality.”

Courtney shrugged. “Maybe he’s tired of being objectified for his looks and would appreciate someone who liked him for his personality.”

Another snort from Ashley. “Sure, whatever you say.”

“Are you talking about that young fella you were with this morning?”

Courtney’s head snapped up at the scratchy southern voice from across the room. An elderly woman lounged on a nearby chair, her face covered in goop and cucumbers over her eyes. Courtney met Ashley’s wide eyes. Her friend shrugged.

“Um, yeah. Yeah, I’m talking about him. Did you see us at breakfast?”

The woman gave a slight nod, careful not to shift her cucumbers or, thankfully, the robe that was in grave danger of falling open. “Very handsome. Lots of muscles.” She made a sound that could only be described as feminine approval. “Quite the specimen, that one.”

“He is, isn’t he?” Ashley piped in. “Can you believe this girl thinks she can just hang out with him and not have sex?”

“Ashley,” Courtney hissed in warning.
