She shivered, then nodded. “You?”

“Perfect.” Though he didn’t quite speak the truth. Under normal circumstances, having a beautiful woman whom he wanted pressed against him would be perfect, but Courtney’s odd behavior ever since he’d woken her up on the lounger the night before made him wary of this perfection.

As they set off, Zack leaned across Ashley and spoke to Courtney. “Seth said he saw you at breakfast with that lady with the cane.”

Courtney’s gaze slashed to him before she returned her attention to his friend. “Yeah, uh her name is Gertrude.”

Ashley bounced in her seat. “Ooh. Is this the woman we saw at the spa the other day? The one who said you’d just know when you were ready to have sex again?”

Courtney’s face turned absolute scarlet and Seth could have sworn daggers flew from her narrowed gaze.

“Yes,” Courtney bit out.

Zack shot Seth a wide-eyed look that asked what the hell they were supposed to do.

“What’s her story?” Seth asked. It wasn’t that he particularly wanted to know all about the woman who seemed to have a preoccupation with his backside, but he wanted to make Courtney think of anything other than her friend’s comment.

Courtney shrugged. “She’s also a widow. She said we were kindred spirits.”

Zack laughed. “I don’t know. I haven’t seen you bumping and grinding with any of the twenty-somethings.”

“And you haven’t pinched my ass even once,” Seth added.

Although a slight blush still tinted Courtney’s cheeks, she smiled. “We still have a few days.” She winked.

A flutter of anticipation lit in his stomach. Just the possibility of Courtney touching him excited him. The kiss they’d shared days ago still invaded his thoughts at every opportunity. He’d love to get his hands on her when she was sober and see how she really felt about him.

He was still thinking about that kiss as their boat approached the sandbar. Already there were other boats anchored and their occupants littered the water. When their boat stopped and the captain lowered the anchor, everyone stirred. Beside Seth, Courtney stood and shimmied out of the sundress she’d worn over her bathing suit.

Holy fuck. The woman was hot. He’d noticed it yesterday in the bikini she’d worn on their excursion, but today . . . Today her bikini was barely hanging on, and he loved every inch of flesh it exposed.

“What?” She stood in front of him with her hands on her hips.

He jerked his head up to meet her gaze. “What what?”

She cocked her hip, pushing her chest out. He tried not to whimper.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“Nothing.” Other than they were surrounded by people and not alone in his cabin.

“So why are you looking at me like that? Is it the bathing suit?” She reached for her dress. “I told Ashley it was too revealing. Do I look like a slut?”

He grabbed her wrist. “Please don’t put that back on.” Yes, he’d resorted to mild begging. He’d get on his knees if she didn’t put the dress down.

Still eying him, she shifted from one foot to the other. “I’m not sure if that’s a yes or a no.”

“It’s a ‘you look amazing, please don’t cover up’.”

She didn’t respond for a long moment. Instead, she stood, studying him as she bit her bottom lip. Finally, she dropped the dress onto her bag and stepped away.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

“My pleasure.” And it was. Watching Courtney do anything would be enjoyable but watching her do it in a bathing suit was no hardship for him.

“Are you coming?” Ashley called from the water.

Turning away from him, Courtney waved to their friends. “We’ll be right there.” She fumbled in her bag and came out with a bottle of sunblock. “Do you . . . Could you . . . Will you put this on me?”
