Chapter Five

Thanksgiving day

––––––––

Ipull up to my parents’house and glance across the street to Dani and Jacob’s as they come walking across the driveway.Beside them is Xander with DJ on his shoulders. He has become one of the family, and I must say, watching him laugh and play with DJ has shown a softer side of him.He is definitely going to be a good father one day.

“Hi guys,” I says, closing my car door with the bag containing the salad and platter tray.

“Happy Thanksgiving,” they say, and Dani leans in for kisses.DJ leans down and messes with my hair.

“I’m a turkey.Gobble, gobble, gobble!”he says, and Xander puts his hands out, gesturing to take the trays from me.I shake my head, letting him know I’ve got it, “a turkey, well!I’m going to eat you up!”I playfully lean in and naw on DJ’s leg.

He giggles and squirms, almost sliding off of Xander’s shoulders.

Jacob holds the front door open while we all walk through.Mom, of course, is in the kitchen, and dad is relaxing on the couch.Nicki and Diesel are out on the back deck, filling the cooler with some type of alcohol.I slide the platter and tray into the fridge and look into the oven.

“That’s a big bird!”I swipe my finger in the mashed potato bowl and lick.“Smells good, mom,” I plant a kiss on her cheek and sit at the table to help prep the utensils.

Once I have the fork, knife, and spoon in the napkin, I fold it and move on to the next.

“You’ll never guess who will be joining us,” Mom says, pushing the potatoes into a tin.Thanksgiving is a major thing here in the Johnson household. She makes so much, we put everything in tins and do buffet style.

“Who?”I wonder, placing the last set of utensils in the basket.

“Brian.”I stop short and drop the basket.Sitting at the dining room table with a beer in front of him sits my ex-boyfriend.With a quick turn, I retreat back into the kitchen.

“Why would you invite him?”I mumble, walking past my mom out the back door to grab a beer from the cooler.Ugh, of all people.

“Kendra, I don’t understand?”I pop the top off a twisted tea and chug half of it.

“Mom, I broke up with him years ago.Why would you invite him for Thanksgiving dinner?”I pull the chair out and sit.The air is crisp with a chill. The temperature is dropping.

“I bumped into him at the market this morning, he is all alone, and Thanksgiving is for all.I thought things ended well.No hard feelings.”

“For fuck’s sake, mom. That doesn’t mean I want to spend the holidays with him.”I look on the table to see what bottle I’ll take a shot from.Good old Nicki never disappoints.Fireball it is.
