Chapter Ten

XANDER

––––––––

It’s been a long day, yet here it is, six forty-five, and I dread the walk over to Kendra’s.She wants toNetflix and Chill. What the fuck!

How am I supposed to explain?I mean, it’s not that I don’t want to have sex.MY GOD!I want to, but I’ve waited this long for the right woman to come along. What if she’s not the one?

The dryer buzzer goes off, and I walk towards the small laundry room to retrieve my white dress shirt. The warmth caresses my skin as I slide my arms through and begin to button it closed.Who am I kidding? How is she not the one?

I’ve taken three showers today in preparation.Rumor has it that the more you jerk off, the better prepared you’ll be and the longer you can last when you finally lose your virginity.I’m still not even sure I can go through with it.Will she laugh at me?Will I be any good?Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done things, but this is different. She is different.

We’ve spent so much time together, between her being my student and teaching assistant and being neighbors. Her family has been genuinely nice and accepting of our friendship; they’ve even invited me for the holidays.

This is nuts. Why am I even worried?

I grab my jacket from the hook by the front door and throw it on as I pull the door open. It’s snowing, and coming down hard, it looks like we’ll have a white Christmas after all.

KENI

I watch as he walks up the sidewalk, and before he can knock, I pull the door open, “Hurry, it’s freezing!”I wave him in and shut the door quickly.

“Why is it so cold in here?”he asks, shoving his hands in his pockets.I push my hood down from my head, “The heat’s not working. The landlord said he can’t get here until tomorrow afternoon.”I tell him, “Maybe we should reschedule this?”I offer.Feeling guilty, I put him on the spot with the whole “Netflix and Chill” offer.

“Let me take a look,” he says and walks towards the basement door.I have to admit.I only go down there to do laundry; otherwise, no, thank you. It’s cold and damp and reminds me of a dungeon.

I follow and flip the switch for the lights to come on.

“Well, the blower is running, but no heat is coming out,” he says and starts messing with what I assume is the furnace.

“What does that mean?”I wonder, stepping to the side.

“Basically, the furnace is working, but the filter is probably clogged,” He motions toward the small workbench where an old metal toolbox sits.I shrug my shoulders, “Go for it.”
