“I’m at Xander’s.What’s the problem?”I snap back at her.
“It’s Dad.I’m sorry to be the one to have to tell you, but he’s in the hospital.”
“What?What happened?”I can feel all the blood drain from my face, and I get light-headed, so I take a seat on the kitchen chair as Xander walks in.
His smile turns to fear the minute he sees my face.He rushes over and falls to his knees in front of me.“What’s wrong?”
“Nicki, what happened?Where is he?”I ask, needing to know so I can get dressed and be by his side.My father is our rock.He holds this family together through thick and thin.We can’t lose him.
“He had a heart attack this morning.He’s in Hackensack.I’ll see you soon.”She hangs up before I can say another word.Xander takes the phone from me, and the tears begin to fall.
“Keni Honey, what’s wrong?”he asks, taking my hands in his.
“We have to get to Hackensack.It’s my dad.”I throw my arms around his neck and squeeze.He holds me to him for a moment then gets up and runs into the bedroom.He brings me a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt, then returns to dress himself.
“I’ll drive,” he takes my hand and leads us out the door to my car.
I’m numb.This can’t be happening.
