Chapter Four

––––––––

The weeks are flyingby.I can’t believe fall is in full swing. Before you know it, winter will be here.Halloween is tomorrow already, and I can’t decide if I want to be sexy, scary, or cute.I look through the catalog and turn the page until I see the perfect costume.

My parents volunteer at the farmers market, where people dress up and go around scaring the kids in the corn mazes.Afterward, we usually end up at the Wig Wam, or I find a party.

This year I didn’t make any plans.Between work, editing papers, and trying not to complicate my friendship and co-worker status with Xander, it’s been hard.

The scarecrow costume will be perfect.A little revealing in some parts but acceptable to wear around children.

I click on the “buy now” button and arrange to pick it up in-store.The email receipt says it will be ready between five and seven tonight, and I will receive a text message.I glance at the clock on the cable box to check the time. It’s still early.I look toward the bay window, hoping to get a glimpse of Xander. No luck.

With my phone in hand, I shoot him a text:Halloween plans?

He replies,None

I click on the call button, hear the line connect, and he answers after the second ring.

“Hey, I’m stopping by the farmers market tomorrow night and probably going to grab something to eat afterward.Want to come?”I ask, getting up from the couch and walking to the kitchen to get a drink.

“What’s at the farmers market?”He asks.

I roll my eyes, “ghost goblins and a corn maze.”

The line is quiet for a moment, “do I need to get dressed up?”

“Duh, it’s Halloween, of course!”I reply, unaware how anyone can go through Halloween without a costume.

“I don’t know,” he says.

“Come on, Xander, what else are you going to do?”I convince him to come and tell him to be ready at five tomorrow, “no ifs ands or buts about it.”

After disconnecting the call, I dash into my room and throw on a pair of leggings, an oversized shirt, and my comfort clothes.I’ll pick up the costume, grab a slice of pizza from the Coliseum and retreat back for some TV time.
